Soot around the turbo waste gate pivot.
2009 X5 35D with 107k kms (66k miles)
Once in a while i experience faint exhaust smell inside cabin (only if its cold, only during first startup). I then carefully inspected with a flash light (by cold starting the engine)when its dark to feel any smoke under the flash light and actually i did small puff of smoke coming out from the waste gate pivot. It's hard to see without any bright light and there is little soot deposited around the pivot area.I also found little play in the pivot shaft. There was a SIB issued by BMW (attached)about this issue. But my question is how much is normal? and how much play is normal? Thanks |

I have a very strong exhaust smell inside cabin and I inspected everything and can't understand where it comes from, but now I will check the turbos... Thanks.

Most likely not a wastegate pivot but a turbine switchover pivot. Will be very hard trying to see a wastegate pivot even from underneath the car. How much is normal? Various people have experienced various amounts. Would be hard to fix. Will need to take off an LP turbo. May be that is why BMW does not want to deal with it.
Should there be smell? Other sources should be considered. Such as turbo to manifold gaskets, cracked EGR cooler intake pipes. EGR cooler to EGR coupling and EMP sensor feed. |
