BIGGNS Le Mans E91

Hi, I’m Billy Biggns! You may recognize me from such threads as E91 Production Numbers, Too Many Tourings and Style 437Ms on my E91. I spend most of my time here helping others locate a long roof of their dreams in the E91s For Sale thread but today I’ll tell my story. What I thought would be a build thread is likely going to end up just a laundry list of maintenance items.

Rewind to 2016 and I had just become a father. I decided a touring would be more practical than my 335, so I posted my lease for assumption and began my search. Initially a manual transmission was a requirement and even back then they were hot commodities. I missed out on a couple forum listings here (modfear and T.Stanley) and then was misled by a couple of dealerships when I thought they were negotiating in good faith. Lesson learned: always place a refundable deposit to hold a car you want.

Finally, after nearly six months of searching and four weeks of driving my brother’s borrowed Kia, I bagged my touring! I placed a deposit on a black-on-black 6MT/AWD at a Mitsubishi dealer in Virginia who would ship the car to WA state for only $500. And then it happened… T.Stanley dropped the most beautiful E91 I’d ever seen into the For Sale thread. A rear-wheel-drive M sport in Le Mans Blue over Saddle Brown interior. I’m a sucker for that color combo so I happily “settled” for an automatic.

I immediately called the BMW Store in Cincinnati and left a voicemail for the Sales manager, I hopped on their website chat and offered to place a deposit that moment and proceeded to email their entire sales staff with my intention to purchase the car. The next morning, I received a call from Mat at the “Bay Emm Vay” Store and we sealed the deal. The factory warranty had expired, but the car still had some time remaining on the maintenance plan so while the airbag was being replaced I also had the oil changed and the brake fluid flushed. Mat texted me a few pictures of the car to hold me over while I waited for the car to be shipped.

I booked an enclosed carrier with Montway for $1,500 and they delivered the car from Ohio to Washington a day ahead of schedule. On Aug 23, this beauty arrived in my driveway. I’d never purchased a car sight-unseen before so it was interesting having to inspect the car while the driver is waiting for me to sign the bill of lading. There were a few door dings, some curb rash on the wheels and a couple minor blemishes on the front bumper but all of that was noted at pickup in Cincinnati, so no reason not to take delivery!

To my surprise, the dealership included all sorts of paperwork to go along with the car. Inside I found the original window sticker ($49,750) along with two different registration cards from 2011 and 2015. Both were issued to the same person, so that means I am actually only the second owner of this car. I assume the original owner leased it for 3 years and then purchased it CPO from The BMW Store which is why Carfax showed two previous owners.

I’m not sure if he custom ordered this build from BMW, but I like the little touches he added: gloss black kidneys, tinted windows and debadged model number. This guy was obviously an enthusiast; his license plate on the 2015 registration was BVARIAN

The best part of all this documentation? This 328 was delivered new on 3/28/2011!

One thing that was unexpected, the staggered style 193m wheels were outfitted with square 225/40/18 Bridgestone Blizzaks. I never really thought of Ohio as a snowy climate, but this car obviously saw some winter driving. I think that explains some of the curb rash and luckily, there was very little rust on the underside. In the end, it was a blessing in disguise because now I have a dedicated set of really good winter tires and a great excuse to find some 19” wheels for the summer time!

I found a full set of style 225m wheels and tires nearby and swapped them in. I liked the look, but they were awfully heavy and also X1 fitment so the offset and tire sizes were just a bit off. I later snagged a set of 17” 194m wheels but the tires were so bald that I never even installed them.

A few months later, BMW mailed me with another bonus. They were discontinuing service on my remaining BMW Assist subscription and offered a $300 buyout voucher towards accessories. I went in the following month to have the Combox disabled and put the cash towards new BMW Performance aluminum pedals, a Performance shift knob with Alcantara boot and new carpeted floor mats. While I was in they threw on some new wiper blades since the maintenance plan hadn’t expired yet.

9 months and 9,000 miles in my care and it was time for an oil change. I took her in to BMW Northwest for service and a detail. While they were inspecting the car they found oil seeping from an N52 usual suspect, the oil filter housing gasket. Their quote to replace it was a little ridiculous so I began searching for a quality indy mechanic to do the job.

In the meantime, I found a nice set of 19” style 313 wheels. They came with factory run-flats installed but I found a mint set of square Pirelli PZero 235/35/19s to wrap them in. In my opinion, these are the best OEM wheels available on the E9* platform.

Thanks to this forum, I found PasionM @ NW Autowork. He was a former BMW Level 1 tech who started his own shop and is now the only person I trust with my BMWs. I had him swap out the OFHG and replace the coolant at a fraction of the cost the dealership quoted me. We also added a new battery to the to-do list since I took a two week vacation to Hawaii and the car started throwing me Increased Battery Discharge warnings.

Welp, two weeks later and it’s time to call Marlon again. I’m not sure if it was related to the battery getting low, but one morning I started the car and I had a cylinder misfiring and a check engine light. Luckily, Marlon got me in right away and replaced all 6 coils and spark plugs. And while I’m here, let’s go ahead and install that new battery.

Have you ever seen style 437m wheels on an E91? Me neither... it had to be done!

Two years into my ownership and I absolutely love the car. I truly feel it’s going to be the last car I ever purchase because it’s so versatile and practical. Seeing as it’s going to be my forever car I decide to start following the Mike Miller maintenance intervals to keep it running in top condition. So at this oil change, I also have the differential oil, power steering fluid and brake fluid flushed.

Oh, and I’ve been deep into the forum now so I’ve learned all about the M parts/upgrades/modifications you can start bolting on to the E91. So I’ve built a collection of M3 parts that I want to swap in: control arms, sway bars, strut brace, subframe bushings. Not to mention the go-fast bits like 3 stage intake manifold, MILVs and BPC tune.

But first, I feel like the brakes should be upgraded. So I found a complete set of stock 335 brakes (calipers, ceramic pads and sweet drilled/slotted rotors) and had Marlon bolt these on.

It wouldn’t be a modern BMW if there wasn’t a recall every year now would it? Time to have the PCV heater and blower motor wiring replaced. Wouldn’t want the car to burn down my garage!

I wake up and one of my angel eye bulbs has burned out. Simple enough to replace one, but why not go ahead and upgrade all the lighting to LED while I’m in there? I get a hold of Jeff@TopGearSolutions and pick up the LED Angel Eyes, smoked LED side markers and LED fog lights. I think the LEDs are a much better match paired with the Xenon headlights.

Also, since I’m giving her a facelift, now is the perfect time to get those IND painted reflectors to delete the ugly orange. And I picked up a set of FCP lifetime warranty wiper blades for front and back.

At this year’s oil change, I decide it’s time to change out the automatic transmission fluid and filter. I’m getting close to the 60k mile interval and little do I know my annual mileage is about to crater.

I’ve also scored one the most coveted No Longer Available BMW parts, a genuine N52 Performance Exhaust. Never mind that it’s a coupe version, it only sticks out a little bit further. The exhaust note is perfection and cold starts are pure joy.

Merry Christmas to me! Cruising Craigslist late at night, I find a super deal on a Crimson Red RWD/6MT E91 local to me. I meet the owner in downtown Seattle a couple days later, take it for a test spin and pay cash on the spot. Finally landed my manual and it does not disappoint. However, I’m not quite ready to part with Blue so I’ll keep both for as long as I can.

It’s official, I have a problem. My name is Billy Biggns and I’m a BMW addict. I received an email about a new E91 listing at BMW Bellevue: a 2009 RWD/6MT in Monaco Blue. Being an Autonation dealer, they allow you to place a free 48 hour hold on any car.

I’m not gonna not claim this car and go check it out in person! My wife is a very forgiving person; you can guess how this story ends.

Apparently the original driver airbag recall did not fix the issue, it just bought time until an actual replacement could be sourced. Oh Takata, may we never meet again.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. My family has outgrown the E91 and I’m moving on to an E61. Luckily, it has 3 pedals and 2 turbos otherwise I wouldn’t be making the switch.

LeMans is back to stock now and has its final service in my care. Oil, brake fluid, coolant, air filter and cabin air filter are replaced. New BMW* RSC Pirelli Cinturatos are fitted. Two brand new H8 angel eye bulbs installed. She’s all ready for her new owner and the next 50,000 miles.
