Crap....I must have jinxed myself. On the way to work this morning, on the same stretch of road, at the same speed, same temp (37 degrees).....up pops the half engine light, and no boost. I pulled over...scanned for codes....yep, same 2E69 Knock Sensor code.

Cleared the code, started the car back up.....and like before, no issues the rest of the way to work.

Bimmer_Engineer

So what did you end up doing to cure the issue? Just replace both knock sensors?

I haven't really got much feedback from anyone at this point.....

I guess I just need to replace the two knock sensors?

I'd be concerned your engine is about to blow. My knock sensors went off and that was it for me. Rod knock started shortly after that. You might be in luck since your codes are actually clearing though, I couldn't get the knock sensor code to go away. Or maybe it did but it came back really quick.

Edit: On second thought, I can't remember which code I got exactly. I just know it the knock sensors went off. Sounded like the same code but I'm not positive.

The code I'm getting (2E69) means there is a wiring issue, or problem with the knock sensors themselves not giving the correct signal back to the DME......it doesn't mean that the sensors are detecting knocking from the motor.

I'm pretty sure the motor isn't going to blow....

I would start with replacing the sensors, yeah. I think they're $80/piece.

And no, your motor won't blow from a 2E69 code, but in the meantime your engine won't be able to recognize engine knock if something did happen to go wrong.

As soon as I restart the car...the fault clears. It's not like the sensors failed, and they are not working. But.....I think one (or both) are on their way out. It's done it two time in about 6 weeks....

I'm going to pull the intake soon to clean the valves ....I put new sensors in when I do that.

This is the only sensor fault I've had. Right after I went in for the HPFP recall my water pump was magically cracked and I had this random knock sensor code start putting my car into limp mode (these sensors are suspiciously close to the HPFP). I replaced the pair of them and have been fault free for 3 years.

Good to know. Sounds like I just need to order them....and get it done.

Well.....I got the same fault again this morning. Same stretch of road, same cold temps out. But this time, it didn't reset the first time I shut the car off and restarted it. It actually took me several tries, and a little more driving before I could get it to reset........so the problem is definitely getting worse.

Good thing I have a brand new set of knock sensors ready to go on this weekend

Mine looked fine also. I'm assuming that something in one of the actual sensors was bad
