E93 rattle

Hi just rediscovered this forum after an absence of 5 years.

Have an E92 61 plate and a E93 62 plate and was wondering if anyone ever got to the bottom of the “rattle” that comes from the vert when the roof is up .
Only just got this vehicle and got to say I’m a bit disappointed with it because of this .

btw the E92 is for sale if anyone interested.

A good starting point would be to lubricate all your seals and joints in the roof. There are a few threads on what to buy and how to apply it.

I've got one, E93. On bumpy roads only, I hear some vert music. Annoying. Need to look at the seals as people mentioned but can't be asked.

I think these cars meant to be as 2nd or 3rd in family, sitting in the warm garage waiting for a sunny day.

No much chance of that up here in central Scotland.

Car has pretty high spec as you would expect ...it’s a 325 plus sport auto/Diesel.on a 62plate.
The fact it was a convertible wasn’t the attraction ...it is a very low mileage example ..only 13000k.Generally keep ma cars for 2years or so but because of this “problem” on the E93s it’ll be long gone before that.

btw how do I update my avatar

Same issue here on my 2013 E93 335is. When the top is down it's tight as a drum but when up, it rattles over irregular bumps. I've already Gummi Phledge'd every bit of rubber, and Lithium greased every joint. As the OP said, it's more of a rattle and less of a squeak. I am thinking its the big bolt locks in the rear that hold the rear hatch down, but I can't see them when the top is up to inspect. Has anyone successfully cured the metallic rattle?

I have an '08 E93 and have just accepted this rattle as a part of life with a cabrio. I think that mine is the trunk cover that has to be dropped for Bavarius Prime to transform. It rattles if it's up, it rattles if it's down.

Oh man I drove an e93 yesterday and that rattle would drive me crazy if it were my car. Hope you guys can solve that issue because I would definitely get rid of the car if I couldn't solve it, it makes the car sound so cheap.

Thanks for your input guys...as Now_Rudi says it’s just something we’ll have to live with...but not for long ..it’s off as soon as I can source something else.

I had a rattle just over the passenger seat when travelling at motorway speeds (with the roof closed). A thorough clean of the seals seems to have sorted it out, maybe I just got lucky.

That’s where the rattle seems to come from with me too OliSharp...when u say seals due you mean all the rubber on show.

I had similar on my E93. With windows down if you grab the edge of the roof and really pull down on it does that stop the rattle?

I had extensive warranty work done on mine and it was one of the locking pins that goes from rear section into front section. It wasn’t engaging properly and the whole roof rattled about.

Hi blues n twos thanks for your input ,I was under the impression that the roof was not included in the warranty....but will enquire.

Apologies for the late reply: i cleaned and lubricated all the rubber seals for the whole roof.

For cleaning i used some detailing APC with a microfibre cloth, and to lubricate I used Nextzett Gummi Pflege. Wouldn't hurt to grease the hinges / joints too.

Apparently re-aligning the roof is pretty complex and not all dealerships are qualified to do it, needs specialist jigs etc.

A couple of the cars I looked at before buying mine were really bad, so if you're thinking of buying a used E93 and it's rattling a lot at low speeds, just walk away.
