What's the point of stretching tires?

I thought that the tire width more or less determined the appropriate wheel width. So, for example, a 235 would be mounted on a 7.5", 8", maybe 8.5" wheel. But I read here about 215s mounted on 9", etc. Why?

Most use tire stretching for minimal clearance situations when running aggressive width and offset wheels.

Stretched tires are quite a debatable subject so it will all boil down to the look you are trying to achieve with your vehicle.

IMHO is makes NO sense to stretch a small tire on a very wide rim. I think it looks stupid.
What's the point to having an 10 or 11" rear rim and run the same size tire that I'm running on my 9.5" rim (265)? The rim bead sticks way out and the tire looks so small.
My goal is to get the largest contact patch on the ground possible so my car can perform to the highest level it can. Stretching seems to be more of a vanity thing where you put a very wide wheel with an agressive offset to say you have a wide rim - and then look at it. I can't imgaine how long that tire would last on a track.
Tell me how stupid this looks putting a 215 tire on a 9" wide wheel. Quite a few others felt the same way.

Ught Oh..

I like that.

I really think tire stretch is in the eye of the beholder. Some guys like the look, others like a fat tire look. and some guys just want to be normal.

Also, people who stretch tires are generally not tracking the car, its more of a daily driver "low and slow" mantra.

This.

People that actually care about the performance of a tire won't stretch em. I don't give a damn if you can fit an 11" wheel on the back of a 335 sedan if you're putting a 255 tire on it. Having the lip of the wheel sticking out past the tire looks horrible, why would you want that? Roll your fenders and get tires that fit.

I had 275s on 9.5" wheels all around on my old car and they looked sick. Huge contact patch at each corner and the tire sat nice and flush with the fender edge.

And yeah, I loved everything about the Audi in that link until I saw how stretch the tires were. Looks horrible.

From the drift scene because it is cheaper than running the right tire size. Get the cheapest tires that will fit and light them up.

Couldn't agree more...IMHO, stretched tires are one of the ugliest things I've ever seen done to a car. It begs for the fuzzy dice to be hung from the mirror.

They should post their pictures on "There, I fixed it".

Stretched tires are all show; no go. Could look good on lowriders ... but?

There's absolutely no creativity, imagination, or sense of style in the E9x world (sans some of LTBMW's work).

Most E9x owners will never drive their car to half of its potential. They just like thinking that spending more money on their car makes it perform better, when in fact, they don't have the skill to make use of its potential, nor the mechanical aptitude to perform the work themselves.

Low and slow, 275s on 9.5", stock with a vented hood... these are just styles of modification. There's no wrong or right. It's personal preference.

But having said that and coming from the VW world, the BMW scene is generally pathetic.
