Square 17s for e92?
I got sick of flats with my 19" 230s and a few years ago just got all seasons for my winter wheels which are 157s. Got 245/40-17 all around. Those tires are now almost worn out, yes worn out not damaged! Should I just replace the tires or is it possible to fit 255s all around with carefully selected offsets? I don't really have an interest in going back to staggered, and don't mind the meaty look at all. But it seems at a glance that I'd have to spend a lot of money for just 10mm and that's all I'm going to get. Am I wrong?

On the E9X non-M chassis, the most popular square 17" setup we see runs the following specs: Front & Rear: 17x9" ET30 with 245/40-17 tires -Direct fit. -255/40-17 can be used but may require front negative camber. -5mm front spacers may be required with certain aftermarket suspensions With a 17x9" ET30 wrapped in 245/40-17 tires at all four corners, this setup will be a direct fit on a stock or lowered non-M E9X. As a wider alternative, you can also run 255/40-17 tires but in some cases with more aggressive compounds, a touch of additional negative camber may be required. However, with all-seasons, you might be able to get away without any additional front camber, as long as your ride height isn't set too low. Hope this helps! -Geirsen

My ride height is dead stock, but the fronts do look like they're really darn close to the fender lip. In fact, I need one new fender because I blasted a pothole one night in the rain with the wheels turned - that was a combo of not seeing a massive hole due to it being filled with water, running 245s in the front, and suspension starting to get worn out - this was a couple years ago, and I just replaced the struts this past weekend and the RF bump stop was completely gone!

I have 235/40/18 and 265/35/18 on my 189's and would stick with 235/40/18 if I went with a square setup. Add a 10mm spacer on the back and you should perform and look good.

You got a bunch of different options...just depends on what you're actually going for and the cost difference between them (if that's even a factor).
255/40 245/40 245/45 etc. Also depends on whether or not the specific tire you want even comes in those sizes... |

I guess what my question distills down to is, for the wheels I have (factory 157), most tires 245 is the max width for an 8" wide rim. I'm more or less happy with them, but if I got 8.5" or 9" wide wheels if I got the offset just so, could I run 255s? It sounds like the answer is no, at least not unless I get some more camber dialed in, and I'm not sure I want to do that.
I'm also trying to ask myself if I dare try DSWs again, I know everyone seems to love them but I literally couldn't keep them on my car (in 19" sizes) I've got some barely worn ones in my storage locker. If they didn't pick up road trash, the sidewalls would crack, I do have a spare tire kit but even so I've never had a car that flatted so often... |

Your questions/intentions are more confusing than the storyline of the movie Tenet...
First you're interested in running wider wheels so that you can run marginally wider tires. Then you're asking about running wider tires, but don't want to run any more negative camber because god forbid you actually take advantage of the performance that a wider tire would bring in the first place. The cherry on top is wanting to run questionable DSW tires, which are already garbage when new...because that makes sense |

I think you're the only person who's called the DWSs "garbage" - everyone seems to love them - except me. Sucks when you hit a pothole and flat a $350 rear tire and your road hazard claim is denied because the sidewall cracked so it must be "improper installation". (yes, this happened to me, twice, and this is why I am running 17s now.) I guess I'm the only person who doesn't drive on a billiard table? FWIW I thought the tires were OK while they lasted whereas the BFGs on there now have been excellent in every way except that now that they're almost worn out they are loud as hell. It really sounds like what I ought to do is just save a little money up and replace the tires that I have with the same size. I'm thinking maybe Pilot Sport A/S this time? |

My e92 has/had 189 rims.
I got another pair of 8" fronts and sold the 8.5" rears. I run 245/40r18 Pilot AS3+ on both axles with a (unnecessary) 5mm spacer in the rear. 245 is overkill for my driving and the n52. One of my front fender liners doesn't fit right and sometimes it'll rub a bit with the wheel turned. 235/40r18 don't do this. |

Do you have a picture of your car with those wheels/tires? That's the exact size I'm looking to put on my E90. I know, different body style, but I'm just trying to get an idea of what they look like. I have OEM 18s and I'm dealing with bent rims and bad tires from the previous owner; buying new wheels and going to a 17" with a thicker sidewall sounds great right now.

I wouldn't run a 255 on an 8 inch wheel, its just too much ballooning and your never going to make the use of the width over a 235 wheel. Stick with 235s and call it a day or 245s if you can get them cheap. Never go 255s on that wheel
