N53 coolant temp not rising enough

First of all, hello from Finland!

Problem is, that when i reset ALL adaptations with inpa, the car warms up normally to 100c coolant temps. Next day problem is back, coolant temps rise only to 65-70c max. Engine temp hovers around 80c.

I suspect that dme is stuck on mapped thermostat mode for some reason.

No fault codes with inpa and car works perfectly normal otherwise.

Any idea what could be the problem? Thermostat has been replaced and after resetting adaptations it works normally.

E-fan and waterpump working as they should too.

Thanks in advance!

Is your car fitted with cold weather shutters or blinds in the grill?

You could try updating the DME.

No, updating the won't do anything.

Have the OP tried to read any error codes with INPA or a BMW specific code reader?

If no codes are showing, you could monitor the cooling system with INPA and insure that the cooling system is actually doing what it's commanded to do.

And why would the update not do anything exactly?

It clearly says in the first post there are no error codes.

I experienced the same on my n53 when replacing to a cheap not oem thermostat. Then replaced that with an original bmw thermostat, and since then the temp has been ok. I also replaced the water pump as the circulation was bad on the old. I suggest you do the bleeding procedure to check that the circulation is good, and eventually replace the thermostat...

updating the dme is one of the things on to do list. Pretty cheap too, local bmw dealer quoted 120 euros for updating it.

And yeah, no error codes on inpa.

local bmw dealership suspected that it might have to do something with nox cats that they have not been able to do the cleaning process and it interferes with something now. I will try with ISTA to force it on and drive for 100-150 km's.

Thermostat is BEHR oem quality, so the problem _shouldn't_ be that.

It could also be your water pump on the way out

I've also done the bleeding thing couple of times and circulation is good. Waterpump gives logical readings and behaves normally when driving, so im pretty sure that waterpump isnt the problem here but who knows

I have also experienced that when the engine don't run in stratified charge mode (N43/53 only(?) - can be seen/controlled with inpa), the temperature will not rise as quickly. Once I force it to idle in stratified charge mode, the temperature will rise quickly to normal. It could be, as the dealer suggests, something with your nox sensor which prevents stratified charge. For me, the bimmerprofs website has been helpful, and I went on and bought the nox sensor emulator a couple of years ago.

because none of that stuff really changed from early to late software revisions. The cooling stuff is always the same. It only really changes (and very slightly even) between regions. And definitely not enough to run 30c cooler than normal.

I noticed that my waterpump is stuck at 76.1% when driving normally. I can control it with inpa and it changes values then. But when controlled by dme it stays at 76.1% no matter what. No fault codes.

Any ideas?

I found the climate control forced a minimum water pump speed.

Hi MakkiE90,

Could you please advise, how were you able to solve this issue?
I'm currently facing the same problem with my bemari N53 330i, and your advice could help me a lot.

Thank you in advance and sending greetings to Finland!
