No mention of a licensed adult supervising driver, which is a requirement for learners permits. Sounds like a case of affluenza to me.....

May he Rest in Peace. I can’t count the amount of posts I have seen on forums over the years from parents saying they want to buy their kids BMWs, Ms, or high performance cars because the kids want them. The back and forth ensues with nothing good can come from it. An inexperienced driver with that power, but the patents do it anyway. I get that you have money and want to give your kids things they want, but smarten up. I don’t know the details here but give them a safe used car with 200 hp. So sad.

Not to minimize the $ amount of someone’s death but no umbrella will cover this. Lawsuits are out of control and awards are well beyond the limits of policies and umbrellas.

Wow, that is messed up. Why would you even buy or hand keys to a high-performance car to a kid that doesn't even have his license?

Hell, when I was 16 and HAD my license I was driving around my dad's Camry. When I was 19 and was able to afford my first car, all my friends asked me why I didn't buy a 335 or M3 instead of a 328. I just knew I wasn't responsible enough.

Even to this day, I don't think I am mature enough for a high-performance car like an M5 and I'm almost 25.

R.I.P. to Yonkers. May his soul rest in peace.

24 years dealing with all of the madness that comes from police work, working his last year on the force, all to have some inexperienced kid that wanted to take a family member's car out for a spin plow into him and takes his life. Very sad.

Sadly, that wasn't the first time or last.. https://www.wptv.com/news/palm-beach...uthorities-say

Unfortunately something like this happens around here all too often.

There was another last year a 17 or 18 year old I believe in a MB with other kids in the car as young as 12, hit a median rolled the car and it landed on top of another in the other direction of travel, instantly killing the elderly occupants.

Very sad, indeed.

But that's what happens when you make M-cars with automatic transmissions.
Any fool can drive one.

Car crashes is one of the leading causes of death in teens.
A 200 hp can also get up to speed and lose control, most cases are teens crashing Toyotas, KiAs , Hondas...the media usually doesnt mention the car unless it's something expensive.

Don't blame the car.

When we were learning how to drive (mid-late 70s), plenty of our parents had muscle cars or Station wagons with 454s, 440s, and 396s etc, shitty handling and automatics.

If there was street racing it was usually on a side road, not the interstate.

It is the affluenza / entitlement to "own the road" today and a lack of respect that causes these tragedies, not performance cars.

Don't forget it's the crazy season. The Holidays are upon us and things just get so lunatic during this part of the year.

I live a half mile from a busy intersection and in back to back days I have seen the aftermath of traffic accidents. Why in most cases is trying to beat a traffic because they are tired of waiting.

This kid if he recovers will have to live with guilt of taking the life some kid's father that roughly his age. I would not doubt this is a case of just taking the keys and going for a joy ride.

Being he is a minor I don't expect to see much in way of punishment happening as we all know the court system is so lenient these days. It has to has to be other wise we would need a state the size of R.I as a penal colony.

Good on you for being responsible and knowing your limits. I wish everyone at your age was. I certainly was not.

The main thing is, I'm not stupid enough to throw all my savings away into a car. Then be broke or live paycheck to paycheck. I know a lot of people my age spend all their money on name-brand crap or on things they really can't afford just to "flex". Like wanting to buy the latest phone when their current phone works fine. Or want to buy the latest jordans and crap.

I tend not to rush into buying things. I think about it for a while. I can go and buy an M3/M5. But, it wouldn't be a wise financial decision. Plus, the M5 is too much power for me and I don't think I'm responsible enough. Hell, it took me months to pull the trigger on the 540 I brought 8 months ago

I went from an $8k car to a damn near $50k car. Couldn't wrap my head around it. But, I didn't throw all my money toward the car either.

^This. I grew up driving in the 1990s and most of us had 90 to 120hp cars. 0-60 in the 8s and 9s was considered quick. A 87 Mustang 5.0 with 225hp/300tq was considered extremely fast and that car did 0-60 in around 6 seconds. My 86 Accord hatchback 5mt with 110hp could easily obtain 70-80mph on city streets so imagine how much faster one could go in with twice/three times the power most cars have these days.

I grew up near that area in Westchester, NY. A lot of spoiled kids, but in this case it doesn't sound like the parents were enablers. It wasn't the parent's car, but that of a relative. The person who owned it probably thought the kid was just going to drive around the block and come right back. This kid obviously couldn't handle the power and lost control and killed a cop. I don't think he's going to get off that lightly.

I learned to drive in a 1958 VW micro bus. 36 raving horsepower. It could just barely kill you. Or someone else.

It's the nut behind the wheel, not the car.
