[BMW60]

Hi everybody, I just bought my first BMW and I’m working on installing a new clutch and pressure plate in it. (One of the reasons I got it for a good deal.) I have the old one out, but as I’m installing the new one, the pressure plate seems to be a lot thicker than the old one. It looks like the spring is compressed too far, (see attached picture,) but I’ve never replaced a clutch on a car, let alone a BMW, so I’m turning to the wide world of web for help.

It has a single mass flywheel, I don’t know if it came that way from the factory or if someone converted it previously, videos I’ve seen online of this car have dual mass flywheels. If anyone knows what the clutch/pressure plate is supposed to look like and if this is right or wrong I would appreciate the help.

I haven’t done one yet eaither but if it is a SMF, find out what brand cause you probably need the matching clutch amd pressure plate for that brands SMF…, and not an off the shelf regular DMF pp amd clutch. (And it is 5/6 chance it’s Valeo smf.)


At least that’s the way it is on r53s and e34s.

Ie Valeo Smf then you use the Valeo SMF pp and clutch disc. Not the oe replacement Valeo pp amd clutch disc because thos3 are for dual mass.

Act you use an act 2600 pp and act disc, etc.

Thanks for the help, it is a Valeo single mass flywheel. I ended up putting it back together as is, and now I’m running into a problem where the throw bearing isn’t making contact with the fingers at all, and instead is rubbing on the pressure plate.


So it looks like I’ll have to take it back apart again and get that sorted out. I did notice that the throw bearing has two height settings, I have a picture of the old one here. I put it on the lower setting, since that’s what the FCP Euro video I watched said to do. If I put it on the higher setting would that fix the problem?

I’m thinking maybe I just put the throw bearing in the wrong way, and if I turn it 90° then it will work right. My main concern is that even on the higher setting the throw bearing still won’t contact the spring.

Upon further inspection, I noticed that the clutch plate that came with the kit doesn’t have any springs in it. I looked up a single mass flywheel conversion kit, and it looks like the clutch plate has to have springs in it. I think this means I bought the wrong clutch, is that right?

That’s the last time I trust Amazon to get a car part right 🤦
