Feeling of misfire at high accel, Dealer says bad transfer case

I have a 2008 335xi. During harder straight line pulls, around 80% pedal position, I will get an infrequent clunky feeling like a engine misfire. I took it to the local dealership to diagnose and they said that it's actually my transfer case binding up and that I need to replace it.

I replaced the transfer case actuator motor about 10k miles ago and it was a completely different feeling than this.

My car has 170k miles and I'm not trying to put in a 4k brand new transfer case. Any tips or thoughts? Does this sound like a transfer case issue and if so, do I really need to replace the whole thing?

Transfer case bind at high rpms sounds weird to me. I always thought if the transfer case bind would be a lower speeds/turns.

Have you checked your sparks plugs/ coils?

Check the spark plugs and see how they look. Thats where i would start.

Is your car tuned? You may need to reset some adaptations to.

I thought the binding would happen at lower speeds as well. It quite litterly feels like a gear spline is slipping and not taking hold. My thought was that it was output shaft teeth have been chewed up and at high load it gives way and slips.

It's not a misfire, they checked tons of diagnostics with the engine and found nothing.

have you tried resetting the actuator motor? I had a similiar feeling, somewhat like a small misfire but was in low rpm. changing the transfer case fluid and resetting the motor fixed it for me. might be worth a try.

That is true. I forgot that's how my F31 felt. Under load i had a "shimmy" and it turned out to be the TC. But the F31 TC's had problems. Especially the diesels.

Change the fluid on the TC see how it smells/looks. If its burnt it could be toast. Resetting the motor is something to try also.

How do you reset the actuator motor? Do I need INPA coding or is it just manually resetting adaptations?

If it's toast you may be able to find a used transfer case that's still good for far cheaper

you can do it through the android app protools or through the code scanner from foxwell, thats how i've done it. I'm pretty sure INPA as well but I dont have INPA.
