N54 Getting Codes 2e83, 2e85, 2e8b

Hey guys,

My 08 335i has been throwing these shadow codes with no CEL:

2e83: Electrical Cooling Pump, Low-power mode
2e85: Electrical Cooling Pump, Communication
2e8b: Intelligent Battery Sensor, Signal

The car does not overheat at all and ive been driving it very spirited. The water pump seems like its working fine and was replaced only about 22k miles ago. I checked the battery compartment to see if the IBS cable was unplugged but everything was plugged in and looked snug. I searched around and saw someone with similar problems changed out his Alternator Voltage Regulator and it cleared the codes but just wanted to make sure before i throw parts at it. All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

The IBS could be faulty even if it's snug. Most likely either that or the voltage regulator as you said, the voltage regulator is like $40 and pretty easy to put in so I'd go for it. Any other issues? Limp mode? Electrical issues? You can also check your voltage with a voltage reader or through the second menu which you can google how to do.

Yeah it has IBS as one of the codes and says communication for the others and since the IBS is what determines where the power is gonna go so it would make sense although in most cases I've seen it's throwing a lot more codes when it faults. Only other things I can think of would be battery, grounding cable, or a a faulty wire from getting chewed or melted. But who knows electrical issues can be tricky and frustrating.

Changed the voltage regulator now getting 2e97 - generator and a charging malfunction message in the check control messages. Water pump and IBS codes are no longer showing... any ideas? Alternator and battery are both a year old

Probably the IBS if it hasn't been changed. Even if the code for IBS isn't showing it's still probable that could be the cause. Also sounds like it could be the alternator but if it's only a year old probably not and I'd say more likely to be IBS

Make sure you purchased the correct replacement for your voltage regulator.

While the alternator is only a year old its a duralast brand alternator that the previous owner had installed, you think this can be causing it? with the old voltage regulator i would only get shadow codes with no CEL, but now a red battery is popping up in the dash and a charging malfunction error.

I would always go with OEM for alternators but even with aftermarket it should last more than a year. Did u replace it with the OEM voltage regulator meant for the Bosch alternator or one made for the duralast?

For OEM yeah but I don't think that would work with the after market but not 100% sure.

I've read of people having codes from not using bosch alternators. I would see if you can get a used one from a parts car and install the voltage regulator on to that.
