To Tune, or not to Tune....

Just wanted to get your guys opinion with whether i should go with a Cobb AP or not. First let me start my saying i had a bad experience prior with messing with a cars ECU. I had a Jetta 1.8t and decieded to get a Neuspeed P-chip, for extra power. The power i was looking for was there, but than again the car was never really the same after that. For example i would encounter random fluttering of the RPM's at stop lights, SES type lights flashing all the time, and sometimes the car just woundnt even start! So as soon as i got my 2008 BMW 335xi i told myself that i wasnt going to touch the engine, and that the car was quick enough....Now obviously im curious. Is it worth the risk??

Yes these cars have been tuned for tens of thousands of hard miles with very little big problems arising. It is the single best thing you can do to your car next being methanol injection.

If you buy a 335 and don't tune it you might as well trade it in for a 325. So the answer is... Tune.

Sounds like typical stock Jetta 1.8T problems to me. Those cars had abysmal reliability.

my wifey has a 328 lol, she wants to kill herself after driving my car. She calls her car a saftey hazard when trying to merge.

"I cringe and close my eyes when i floor it trying to merge"
Response "OPEN YOUR EYES, use the shoulder lol"

I have a guy who can fly out and tune your car for you, he's the only one in US who I would trust with an European car, he has a very busy schedule, but he uses Italian stand alone software and it works like a charm, forgot the name of it, and he charges around $2k , if you don't want to spend the money get GIAC COBB or jb4 , I simply don't say procede because it costs 2x as much as jb4 and barely any better IMHO

Well that's your problem right there. You bought crap chip tune! You should have went with GIAC or APR. They have by far the best chip tunes for the 1.8T for stock turbos and BT.

Dude. Get a 335i. Forget the x-drive. I was a VW/AUDI gearhead for 7 years and the 335 is in a different league.

I had a GIAC tuned 1.8T. Now I have a Procede tuned 335. No regrets and quite a step up in power.

Wait until you tune it, then you will realize how slow it really is.

Here is what you should do......sell all your skirts and use the proceeds to buy a huge set of brass balls and a tune (maybe a couple of other parts too). Then drive as fast as humanly possible down the freeway screaming "oh my god, oh my god" (see e90vader's post) and tape the whole thing. We would appreciate that

I would say Cobb is not the best idea right now given your prior experience and current expectations. Try any other option like JB4, Procede, GIAC.

I agree a tune really wakes these cars up, but lets not forget more power= more stress on the car. So only you can decide if that extra stress is worth the extra power...which in most cases it is since our engines are very strong.

I love when you come in with comments like these all the time. Since as you say, given his experience, are you implying the Cobb will throw SES lights everywhere, flutter RPM's and stall him out all the time? Because that's a huge accusation you're making with once again...no proof which you seem to do alot.
