Leaking Oil Filter Housing Gasket - Belt/Pulleys at same time?

Just discovered by Oil Filter Housing Gasket is leaking pretty good on my 2011 E93 335i. I just hit 60K miles.

Dealer diagnosed when I was having my airbag replaced and they were more than happy to change the OFHG for just over $1300.

Anyway, I have replaced this gasket before on my 2008 X5 3.0 so I have the tools. I realize that there are a few differences as my 2011 E93 is the N55 engine that I believe requires that I loosen the intake manifold to reach that rear bolt.

My question, should I replace my belt, the belt tensioner and idler pulleys while I am at it. Or at this mileage is it too premature unless I have signs that the belt has been exposed to oil.

Thanks in advance
DJ

BTW - I will be doing spark plugs at the same time in accordance with the service interval.

Oil and drive belts do not mix. Spend the extra 90$ on a new tensioner and belt.

Agreed, you don't want the belt to slip off and get wound around the crank pulley.
And yes you have to move the intake manifold to get to that bolt in the back but just slightly.

Thanks for the input - I will go ahead and order parts to replace the belt and pulleys.

I assume that this is pretty straightforward. I have not done it on a 3 series, just on the X5 and a couple of 7 series. Nothing too significant.

I would take off the entire intake manifold, replace the intake gaskets, throttle body gasket & clean the throttle body, and scrub the intake valves the old fashioned way. You will need a 22mm for the crank, in order to turn over the engine. Buy some SS wire brushes and a gun cleaning kit. Get Seafoam intake cleaner. Maybe 3-4 cans.

Or

Splurge for your own walnut blasting kit. BAV Auto has one of around $225.00.

Then buy a catch can & install.

Just a "while your in there" deal.......

OK, over the weekend I went ahead and replaced the spark plugs, changed the oil filter housing gasket and replaced the belt, pulleys and tensioner on my 2011 E93 convertable with the N55 engine.

All in all took me roughly 7 hours to complete everything following various you tube guides that were actually quite good. I would have been completed in the 7 hours but I dropped a manifold nut down in the engine bay and after an hour of trying to retrieve it I gave up and picked up a replacement from the dealer on the next day.

This is not overly difficult just a bit tedious because you needed to remove quite a bit of stuff to get to everything but well worth the savings vs having someone else do it. As mentioned above, I received a $1250 quote for just the Oil Filter Housing Gasket (which would have taken me no more than 3 or 4 hours on its own which is much less than the 6 hours quoted by the dealer).

Pulleys are very likely fine. I did mine at 164k and my belt, pulleys, and tensioner were all in great shape. I replaced the belt but left the others. I'd recommend the same for you.
