Another point to check is the spring isolation pad, one on either end of the spring, it is just a shaped piece of rubber that keeps the spring perch off the ends of the coil. Had a rock stuck in this spot on my 735i and it would make a nice clicking sound when turning. Never have seen one split, so maybe something to look for while you are in there.
Not very likely, but hey, 20 minutes with a small pick tool and it was nice and quiet.
