People like that make my brain hurt. My inner gear head rebels against such stupidity.
This is the exact reason why I believe you should have to get special endorsements on your license to buy any car that isn't a basic econo-box. If you don't understand the tech don't get in over your head....

CarMax doesn't care because they can repair the car at cost and still turn a profit. I had an emission light on my truck from a blown exhaust manifold, other than that, it was fully loaded and had a few nice mods. Took it to them, they bought it for full blue book. I told the guy about it and he just shrugged and said don't worry about it, or mention it when we go back inside. I smiled and walked away net positive in my wallet.

I just bought a 2011 E92 335i from CarMax for a steal! Awesome car and no problems to speak of. Good thing it only has 14k miles and is still well within BMW Warranty

It's kind of funny how amateurs with an internet connection think they can beat a professional whose livelihood depends on beating you at the retail level.

People actually believe that they got KBB in trade on defective motor vehicles, that's a hoot!

I wonder if you took the defective vehicle out of the picture, and offered car max cash, if your selling price would be the same? If so, that's really sad indeed. It's like folks going on the internet and getting an "AMAZING" price. Sure, at the etail or retail level. The retailer who goes to the distributor/wholesaler gets it 45% less than that.

For the most part you are right, but car dealers aren't rocket scientists and they can be just as lazy as anyone. Most likely they figure they'll win most of the time, but not every time. The effort to reduce their risk to zero isn't worth their cost. As a consumer you should know your rights and consumer protection laws because mechanical quirks like these are nothing compared to the numbers of flooded cars that get dumped on the used car market.

From a former Carmax buyer I can tell you that it would absolutely work. We don't do any mechanical examination prior to buying the car. We check for previous body work, obvious signs (visual and driving) of mechanical problems, we make sure everything works (windows, ac, radio/nav, etc.) we take a very short drive, and then we look at what we can buy the car for at auction and what we can sell the car for after typical refurbishing. With those factors in mind we make an offer that is good for 5 days or 500 miles. If the CEL is off when you bring it in we'd never know the difference. If you reset the CEL and it came on after we made the offer, but before you actually traded it in we still wouldn't know since a different department handles the purchasing of the car.

I don't work there anymore so I'm not obligated to the company. Just a thought for those interested in selling your car there.

We would eventually catch it on the back end and then either fix it at cost, or if it would cost to much then we would then send the car to auction for other dealers to buy.

As for the the Carmax employee who wouldn't buy a car there, well let's just say they are not the sharpest knife in the drawer. As an employee you get to cherry pick the best cars and pay slightly over cost for them. I bought multiple cars there and then sold them back for an almost identical cost even after a couple years of driving them. If you were going to buy a used car there is no better way to do it. If you work there and buy somewhere else, well let's just say that'd be like working for BMW then buying your BMW from a dealership at retail.
