Question for anyone from Florida

I'm probably moving to the Melbourne area soon, and I have a question for all of the Floridians here. I heard that in Florida there are no good twisty roads since there are no mountains. Is this true? In central eastern Florida how far would I have to drive to find a nice road? I'm assuming there is at least a lot of nice coastline to drive along. I've always wanted to drive to the keys.

Florida Roads

The roads around Melbourne tend to be flat and straight. A1A (the road that runs along the coast) is a great drive but it is heavily traveled and policed so it is not a road that easily be used wring out a car. As you head away from the coast (west) the roads are much less populated but they are as flat as a board and usually not very curvy.

You could always head North to Daytona or West to Sebring and run a few hot laps on a track. Check with the local chapter of BMWCCA to see if they have track days you can participate in.

If you have a lot of time you can follow the coastal road all the way to Key West. Very pleasant drive but a lot of stop and go.

I am picking up an E93 in West Palm a week from Monday so I am looking for good roads in the area myself.

You'll be an easy two day drive (one long day) from the north GA/NC mountains. You'll find all the twisty challenging roads you could ever want there. The drive up through Helen, GA is absolutely wonderful.

Melbourne

Tropical Trail is nice, have to watch you speed as it is a police trap in certain areas. Same with US1 through all of Brevard county but specially in Melbourne, watch your speed.

Ocala, Inverness & Gainsville have some twisties

Ocala, Inverness & Gainsville is horse country with lots of narrow twisty roads that are pretty smooth with no lights whatsoever for miles and miles.

You won't be more than an hour away from some twisties from where you plan on moving. The ONLY real problem I hear from someone I know that lives there is that there are OLD PEOPLE! What I mean is that you may be driving at a nice 80 mph clip gliding through switchbacks and BAM! some old person will crawl out into your lane! BMWs can avert disaster but OLD PEOPLE is another issue altogether.

My advise, go on the weekends and enjoy the drive in broad daylight.

Check this route out:

There are also a few hilly areas around Tallahassee (plenty of back roads tho).

RE: Twisty's in Melbourne ?

Sorry my friend, you will be sorely disappointed.

As mentioned above , Lots of Blue Hairs here as well as gridlock on ALL areas of Brevard county,FL.

The Ocala area is about 2.5-3.5 hrs away - good area there......

But basically , if you want to wind your Bimmer up, its gonna be on I95 or 192 west of town between Melbourne and Kissemee.

Not to rag too much - but the BMW Dealer in Melbourne is lacking in amenities as well , if you are used to a Larger Metro dealer that took care of you , you will be nothing short of frustrated with The Imported Car Store.

in the SFL area, there is no twisty roads. just straight, bumpy, and boring...the drive to the keys is nice (i go almost every weekend), but its not a fun drive, just the ocean (once you can see it on bridges) is beautifull..
