That is really strange. As it is just a push fit rubber seal and hence why any oil leaks straight down from it...

I can always get a new seal and see if that helps but I don't see how...the current seal is still flexible and doesn't look to be damaged..

Okay, back to lots of oil dripping. Sigh.
This is getting really tiresome now.
The red pipe is sealed fine. So now I back to thinking it is the turbo. The clean air intake pipe that goes onto the front of the turbo, there is A LOT of oil leaking from the bottom of that seal, too much to say it is coming from the crankcase breather as I originally thought. Also, going back to the pressure when removing the dipstick or oil cap, there isn't really an increase in pressure i.e. it is just the normal vapour coming out at atmospheric pressure.

Hi mate,

was reading through your post again as my car will be back on the road next month and I'm hoping the vortex breather will stop the 1-litre oil loss! Anyway, like another chap said your air mass to turbo pipe is different (comparing to your realoem link)? the crankcase ventilation hole connects to that pipe with a small 4 inch rubber push on straight hose but that design is a lot different.

Also, the oil is coming from the boost pipe 100% and not from the brake vacuum pump? Have to ask cause when mine leaked it hits off the EGR cooler and immediately drips onto the red boost pipe.

Hey mate.

Yep I know its different. I've also secured that 4 inch rubber tube which connects to the clean air intake so no leaks from there. However, I really can't see the breather expelling that much oil, to the point it is dripping loads from the bottom of that pipe.

Nope definitely not the Vac pump as I changed all the seals in that too not that long ago and it's dry all around there.

cannot remember if ive mentioned..but have you checked the oil feed pipes to turbo,on my 335d i replaced the small turbo oil feed pipe,,the crimped joins to the rubber were knackered,,also leaking from the banjo bolts which have 2 copper washers,,the washers can fail as they are the crush fit type ones,,bmw dealer part and 4 copper washers..cost me less than £50 and easy to fit,,dont know where they are located on the 330d but real oem will tell you.ps the oil was dripping down over everything,,dont know what it looked like under load but my guess was plenty more oil leaking/squirting

Yep I've both the return and feed pipes at both ends of each and both look dry.

ok..worth a shot..what about the pipe to and from the breather housing,,i know on the 335d this can crack/get blocked with crud..

To be honest, I've not noticed in this area? I have had this piece out but it was dry on the outside of it, although I wasn't really expecting anything wrong here? Might be worth another check but I'll be surprised if I didn't notice it when it was out.

Just thought I'd add this as we've covered the crankcase breather filter sorting oil consumption issues. There was a PUMA article explaining everything and while searching for it I came across this chap who explains it to a T even for our engine and the fact ours comes with no separation filter was just nuts, it was interesting to read how the added pressure causes the intake manifold to leak from the swirl flaps which then knackers the glow plug controller which is exactly what happened to mine! I was at BMW today wanting to buy the loo roll but I didn't know the part number and it is of course not listed for our engines so I'll have to sort that out for Friday when I go pick some more stuff up

Good read that, nice one. I have read similar posts before elsewhere with regards to the separator. I agree that a proper filter in the separator is best at the expense of having to change it.

I'm having my car checked by a specialist tomorrow, see what they advise. I've had enough of wasting time trying to rectify this!

I can imagine mate! I check every now and again to see how your doing but that leak is really weird and you've had quite a few opinions from people and got no where so I suppose in this case the diagnosis charge is well worth the money, let's hope its an inexpensive fix as well! Keep us updated

just read that,,so the old style breather nousing still fits the new shape type one on the 335d and 330d lci ?,,that what i understand,,but naturally you have to get the number 15 parts to go inside the number 11 breather housing,,ive read a big write u of someone trying to do this but made his own filtervetc,,just wondering why he didnt interchange the breather housings like in this

I'm popping down BMW today and I'm going to order 11127793164 which is the older loo-roll style filter which I've read works better but requires maintenance which I don't mind to be honest as I'm always doing stuff on the car anyway haha. But, If I'm not mistaken they're quoting £29+ VAT for the filter? It's like £9 all in on eBay but it would be nice to have a genuine filter considering what it may do.. I spend £10/month on oil topups

ive had e bay filter,,also im sure i can get genuine for less,i was a memeber of the 75andztownersclub,,i had an mgztcdti may moons ago,,they have the bmw 320d engine,,the loo roll filters were in them,,i bought a sppare and would swap them round..clean the old one for next time..simples..ps im sure the loo roll will not fit in your car,,you need the e39 housing also,,well thats my understanding of the topic

It looked good you know mate! Pushed the rubber seal on and the loo roll slipped over the rubber washer and was solid, I haven't put it on the valve cover yet though but in all honesty it looks like a perfect fit at the moment

Yeah it's M57 so fitted perfectly just need to hurry up and solder the glow plug controller then I can put the car back together and see if I still lose oil.. I also need to figure out which LAMBDA sensor is out as I reckon that might be why I've always got 23ish MPG

Okay so...got it checked it over last week and the dude was very helpful near me. He narrowed it down to and confirmed there are two main leaks:

1. Turbo is passing quite a bit of oil - he took the clean air intake pipe off and ran it you can see the oil seeping past the turbine. There was some thrust movement in the shaft. I checked this a while ago and there wasn't any so it definitely has got worse.

2. Vacuum pump seal against the engine - MrSweet, you did mention this I know but I dismissed this as I had already changed all the seals. But once the mechanic pointed it out, it was obvious I hadn't sealed it properly. ALSO, at the time I changed the seals, I stupidly undid the head cover bolt just above the vac pump. I then couldn't tighten again which meant it must have sheared and I just left it. There is a possibility that this bolt also acts as a clamping force around the vac pump...hence again, not sealing properly. I did bring this up a while ago (https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1508997) but never got round to sorting it as I didn't think it was an issue.

It's booked in with this same guy to fix the head cover bolt by removing the complete cover, replacing broken bolt and re-assembling and to properly fix the vac pump again. Once this is done, I'll replace turbo or have some company get mine rebuilt/refurbished etc.

I'm happy there is progress!

might as well get it upgraded ie bigger turbo/hybrid..cost prob the same
