CKS Exhaust being fitted on 335d

Next Friday I am off to CKS for a cutom built exhaust for my 335d. I have not decided yet on the exact system as I donlt know the current set up of the stock systems.

What I do know is I am deleting the 2 rear boxes for sure.

What I don't know is if there is a center box too after the CAT. If there is I may delete this too and go straight through pipes form CAT back....as long as it not boomy or too loud Otherwise I may Go CAT back and replace the center box and do the rear delet only.

Anyone have any suggestions or experiance of this ?

The stock 335D exhaust has three silencers/baffles,two at the rear and a central smaller one.

If you want more power (15bhp ish) combined with a better aural experience (term used loosely!) it's best to go completely straight through from the DPF back.

Internal noise from a s/t exhaust is far from loud, nor boomy,in fact the only time you'd hear it internally is when the rear seats are folded.

Adding any form of baffle/silencer to a custom exhaust is to my mind and experience, a waste of money,if you're considering doing that, you'd be better off just changing the stock tips to something with a bigger bore.

Thanks for the info, that's good to know. I will go CAT back straight through then. I am guessing when you say DPF back that would be a CAT delete too ?

The cat and dpf are one unit, just after the turbo chargers.

Be interested how you get on.

Is the CAT still separate to the DPF? if you have a fault with either does it mean swapping both?

I'm also interested in how yours turns out OP

By the sounds of it I will definately be CAT back straaight through then as I do not want to go CAT Delete AND I donl;t want to have to manage an codes thrown etc. I want to leave all sensors in place, doing what they are supposed to do and no need to tweak the MAP in anyway at all.

I will post what happens and how it all goes when it is done.....not long now as its booked in on Monday 26th Nov

They are contained within one cannister and cannot be separated.
Hence the high price to replace a blocked DPF.

interesting .. mine is has a custom exhaust and have been told the cat was removed. ( must have been because the exhaust fumes stink like a mid 90's peugeot 306 DTurbo !)
The DPF must still be in place though because I can eat my dinner off the inside of the pipes .. clean as a whistle .. even at 95k

Did they have to code out the sensors ?

The short answer is I don't know and to drift slightly
I bought the car in it's current configuration and hence don't exactly know what's fully been done to it. The original owner ( not the previous owner) of the car clearly knew what they were doing as far as tuning it is concerned( probably one of the first to do such mods in my opinion as my 35d is a very early one... probably used to contribute on this very forum many years ago).
I'm guessing it's been remapped at some point as well as the custom pipes , the cat is definitely gone but the DPF remains because of the cleanliness of the tail pipes. I would dearly love to find the original owner , because some gaps in it's tuned past need filling in.
I have remapped the car , under certain circumstances it doesn't behave very well because I believe some previous custom coding is interfering with the current map.

To regenerate the DPF the exhaust temp needs to be at about 650degC for about 10-15 mins, max exhaust temp at turbo in is 800degC at max power.
Maybe in Germany it's possible to maintain these high exhaust temps or on the track but in normal driving it's not. So what happens is an exothermic reaction is set up in the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (cat) that increases the gas temp from the normal 300-400degC to about 650degC and allows the DPF to regen.
No cat, no regen, blocked DPF in about 1000km.
Last job was DPF calibration engineer

I was thinking last night, the rear boxes are very big on the stock system and when I remove these there is going to be a great "void". how will this affect the aerodynamics of the car at speed ? or will it be insignificant ?

I reckon that's more than possible, there's a fair amount of room there.

I had my rear boxes removed and since then everytime I hit 88 mph there seems to be fire on the road and Ford Escorts and Capris everywhere. Must be the aerodynamics :-D
