E92 Fresh Air Intake position?
Could anyone point me to the position of the fresh air intake position on an E92 (n57), got a odd smell thats recently started which seems to be noticeable when parked up with engine on (engine warm), but disappears when moving. (This is with air con off). No visible oil/coolant leaks from engine or gearbox, and can’t seem to locate the same smell with bonnet up, almost smells like Gas in the vents !

Did u fit a carbon filter? The first time I changed mine I didn’t know any better & fitted a standard filter & noticed a ‘fumey’ kinda smell in the cabin. Changed it for an activated carbon filter & never had the smell again. Apart from when the VCG was leaking bit that was a oily smell.

It was just the std filter, I did see the carbon ones but assumed they probably wouldn’t work!, so you can recommend the carbon ones are a good option. might be worth a purchase, I notice Bosch ones are about £20, genuine bmw are about £60, probably no difference?

It's worth giving it a go, before fitting the carbon filter I definitely got traffic fumes in the cabin when in stationary trafic.
Bosch currently on ECP for £12.24 with Discount code, it's what I've been fitting in mine.

With E9x is there a second filter inside the dash somewhere as well as the pollen filter in the engine bay at the bottom of the windscreen.
Apologies if this is a stupid question!! |

Purchased a carbon activated micro filter on the off chance it would work, unfortunately not. Had all the plastic undershirts removed, no leaks st all, no leaks from engine bay area oddly you can’t smell the smell in the engine.
Tried a odour bomb, didn’t work, rather frustrating! |

Not that I'm aware of. That's the first I've heard of it, if there is. If you discover one, let us know its location and part number!

Have you had the undertray off to check for oil leaks?

All trays been off, no leaks anywhere, everything bone dry. Had all the microfilter ducting off, nothing smells in that area.
The only thing I did see was a few specs of what’s probably diesel around the fuel filter, (recently changed at bmw) so cleaned that off, smell still remains. Is there any vent pipes behind the engine which exit near the fresh air inlet? Might just give the whole area a thorough clean and see what happens, I was hoping for something obvious .... |
