Fractured skull

Not to threadjack the Viv's meal thread.

On Friday - my wife had a call from school saying not to worry but Benjamin has had a fall and needs picking up - they then mentioned that he was also bleeding from his ear. My Mrs called me (in a right state - I had to try and calm her over the phone) - we then agreed we'd meet at A&E. I ditched work and ran to the car. It didn't take me long to get to the city but then it was school run time so there was a lot of traffic in the centre. I called my Mrs to ask what the state of him was and she said she was still stuck in traffic aswell. Parked in the A&E bit and dashed inside - was led to a cubicle to find the Mrs and my two kids. Benjamin with a closed left eye and drifting in and out of consciousness. Blood coming from his ear aswell.

I asked how long my Mrs had been there and it turned out that the school hadn't called an ambulance for my son but expected my Mrs to take him in the car! My Mrs was in shock and duly bundled him into the car to take him!!

After 2 CT scans - docs confirmed he has a basal skull fracture. It was touch and go at first but he's home and ok at the moment (short of a big red line down his face - a shiner and a split lip) - oh and a skull fracture.

We will be talking to the school this week - we feel very let down by how they performed.

I would do the exact same, it's outrageous the school expected your miswah to take him to the hospital considering his condition. WTF are ambulances for FFS

All the very best to Ben mate and yourselves.

Oh my God Paul.

How is the lil' one now? basal skull fractures are soooo scary.

May I ask how the hell he did it.

Im DISGUSTED with the school.... They should have called immediately an ambulance right away for any sort of minor injury let alone a head injury.

Blimey Paul, thats an awful story, glad the nipper is on the mend though, what a worry . I would be pissed off with school, I bet you are, they should have erred on the side of caution to get him to hospital soonest - no doubt you will be having words.

I dont blame you bud, thats shocking, Surely someone with a bit of common sense would have got the ambulance there and then. I think someone needs a good boot up the arse from you sir.

Hope the wee man is ok!

basal skull fractures 90% of the time dont end well.

Lots of racing drivers have died of this.

blood coming out from the ear = automatic call to the nearest ambulance centre. It's really a no-brainer, figuratively speaking. I hope you lil'one is doing better now.

That is really shocking. Normally the schools over react but anyone with basic first aid knows that bleeding from the ear after a head knock is not good. Hope your boy recovers soon.

Paul

That is frightening. I just mentioned the story to my miswah and she couldn't believe it either that the school did not call an ambulance for a head injury when the wee man was bleeding from his ear. Unbelievable. Wonder what they wrote on the 'incident form' for that one....all sorts of paperwork and not a jot of common sense.

Hope he is back up to full speed very shortly. Kids never cease to surprise me how resiliant they are.

Best

John

We're both disgusted at that Paul - hope he's not too uncomfortable and recovers quickly....

That's shocking Paul! Now I see how you were otherwise engaged this weekend! I hope you give the school some grief for the grief they caused you and the mrs!

Hope he's on the road to recovery now!

Thank goodness he is alright mate.

I really don't understand how the school missed this. Bleeding from the ear should definitely have caused them to treat this as an emergency.

I'm sure you and the Mrs have had a real scare.

Have the school been able to explain what happened to cause the fracture? Presumably this must have been more than a 'normal' tumble in the playground?

Anyway, all that is secondary. Main thing is that your lad is OK and you are all together as a family.

That is shocking, it seems like they school thought it wasnt anything serious?!?

I'd rip the school headmaster to shreds for that, as well as contacting the local paper about it.
