I've got a e91 335d on a 56plate.

I wonder if mine is affected?

I will be on the blower Monday morning.

Looks like quite a few things need changing.

Don't suppose your car is 2.0 petrol?

Just spoke to my indi who said it's the N43 petrol engines that's affected.

Apparently it's a new recall/quality enhancement.

He reckons it's the vac pumps that deteriorate and cause issues.

The N43 must use a different braking system to a N47/N57 e9x.

At least they are sorting it ! I suppose brakes are important. Lol

Good good, I'm glad from bringing this to people's attention it's helping out other owners. On collection of my car on Saturday following a brake fluid service this QE is booked for this coming Saturday, I spoke with the service guy and he said the first one they did was just a full vehicle software update required but he did say it's very open ended and the full vehicle update is the start then they have a lot of parameters on various modules to check through before any required replacements/retrofits etc before sign off so all vehicles even tho on paper the same are very different going into this and that's why they could not really guide on time for the job to be completed.

He did say they only heard about it at the end of last week and it was sent as urgent from BMW UK from Germany

So my car is booked in for Saturday to have this done and I have received this from my dealer this morning am a bit confused to be honest

"Now I believe you are booked in this Saturday for the Quality Enhancement on your BMW 318i, Now the reason for my email is because the QE itself has been suspended by BMW themselves due to the technical campaign so we are unable to carry out the QE. Also with this recall BMW technical like to be heavily involved with the QE and they are not open on Saturdays, so unfortunately this isn?t a Saturday job"

Depends on the engine only effects 4cyl but this QE has currently been pulled by BMW UK and after speaking with my dealer they don't know when it will be re opened by them.

I just had this QE done on my 320i and now it's come back from the garage with a 'your engine isn't running at full power' warning on the dash that won't go away.

The garage say the problem was there before and the QE just made it so the car noticed it, so they're trying to charge me to fix it (which would appear to be changing the vacuum sensor).

Has anyone had this? Any ideas? Looking at the wording on the QE posted above, it looks like they should really change anything that fails after the diagnostic in the QE FOC.

thanks!

Where did you have this done? Was it a BMW dealership or was it a BMW specialist? I have not heard anymore on the QE update I mentioned in the OP and as far as I'm aware it is not offered by BMW and all. I've had another QE relating to the brake servo in the meantime since my OP and there was no mention of the QE in my original post being back online or required as far as my dealer was concerned they had the QE they fitted to two cars then BMW came back and said it wasn't needed and they took it off the cars it went on and ceased notification of it. I do know that BMW Germany had to communicate with the UK dealer system and implement update from that side as because I couldn't make the slot they needed mine didn't go in for it and when I could get it there they had stopped it.

Don't know what or who has updated your car but it sounds a bit dodgy if it was that update in my OP.

Sorry for the delay - I forgot to subscribe for updates.

It was BMW North Oxford.

The QE was described as "Brake Vacuum Sensor Campaign" on the receipt I got. It sounds a huge amount like the QE you posted (update software to track vacuum problems better).

It's frustrating because they knew there was an error logged for vacuum before they talked to me about something else, so they could easily have said "oh by the way, this'll put a massive yellow warning in your instrument cluster that you won't be able to remove unless you give us £250".

I even made the mistake of paying them £90 to try and diagnose some slight misfiring at idle, for which the only thing they did was read the ECU codes (which it seems they did anyway as part of the recall).

After waiting 7 hours for something I was told would take 2, not the best experience I've ever had

Yeah, I just wish I'd read some reviews of North Oxford BMW before going! I didn't even think as I usually maintain it myself and just wanted the recall done.

Compare the google reviews of that and Rybrook and there's a huge difference!

edit: To be fair to them, they have now agreed (or BMW has) to pay for the new sensor & fitting. It took quite a lot of hassling them though!

Sorry to bump an old thread but it seems to me this QE is not really about the brake vacuum servo at all.

What it is essentially doing is checking the timing chain condition on the engine.....which is a known weak point.....I assume they could not call the recall "timing chain recall because it would have opened a can or worms for them re: admission of problem and liability.

The recall is to do with the brake vacuum. On manuals with stop/start the servo has a vacuum sensor already installed, on automatics that don't have stop/start a vacuum sensor is retrofitted. The vehicles software is updated to a later version to take into account different parameters. I believe the reason timing chains were elongating or failing because of this was the fact there was no sensor to monitor brake vacuum or the software was incorrect with regards to operating parameters & as the vacuum pump is driven by a camshaft it puts excessive strain on the timing chain. I hope this information is of some help?

Thanks for this info. I currently have a thread running re; multiple iDrive errors, some of which might relate to this?

I'm struggling to find out though if my car is affected by the recall/QE...is there any sure way to find out? Have contacted dealer but still waiting response...not normally forthcoming are they?
