New Wheels - Rubbing
Hi All
Earlier this week I had my new set of CM Wheels CSL Style wheels fitted. They look brilliant... ...however, I now have a serious rubbing problem. These wheels replaced 19" 230 style wheels and I'm using the same tyres; Michelin PS2 225/35/19 up front, and Michelin PSS 255/30/19 at the rear. The offset of the new wheels are: 19x8.5 ET38 19x9.5 ET27 I've no idea about offsets but I'm assured by CM that these should fit without an issue, and I've no reason to doubt that. Whenever I go over a bump at speed, or a sharp left-turn, I hear a graunching noise from the off-side rear. This is what has happened to the tyre over the last couple of days, but only on the off-side. The near-side is fine! Any ideas what the issue may be? Everything was fine on the 230's so it will be a massive coincidence if a spring has suddenly snapped or something. Otherwise, the car seems to handle just fine. Edit: According to this website, due to the different offset of the 230 wheel, "he outer rim will poke out 12mm more than before". Is that the issue? If so, how come it's only apparent on one side?! Cheers all |

Rubbing on one side only is not uncommon. I had the same issue. You'll need to get your rear arches rolled - or in your case, just the offside. You may not need much of the lip rolled. If you jack the car up and look at the arch, you should see where it's rubbing. I only needed a short section towards the rear of the arch rolled.

the new wheels are wider, and have a lower offset. Both of these things acts to push the wheel further out.
So you've gone from ET39 on the 230 to ET27, which has pushed the wheel out 12mm, but the new wheel is also half inch wider, meaning it sticks out a quarter inch more as well. As above, there are tolerances at work and often the rear end isnt perfectly central under the car, so it can catch on one side and not the other. I would get both rear arches rolled which should sort the issue. |

You are most likely rubbing where the fender meets the bumper. Not great as this area can't be rolled. Could try another tyre brand...michelins are usually quite chunky. Conti5p are slightly slimmer (all for the same size / profile of tyre)

Are these the atomic CSL style wheels they do?
I have them from CM Wheels in the same specs as yours and get no rubbing what so ever even with a full load over bumps. I have continental tyres on though. Perhaps there is something in your arch that isn't fully clipped in? |

Fender rolling time matey. I got rubbing on just the left rear wheel (rear near side) when using 15mm spacers on my car with 255 size wheels and stock alloys.
I've taken the spacers off until I do some rolling myself

You could jack the car up or park on a curb to see where it's likely contacting. Feel inside with your hand.

Thanks all for the responses and apologies for the delay!
It has settled down a lot now, doesn't seem to rub as much as it did. Whether that's because it's worn part of the arch away is unclear When I need new rear tyres I'll probably just go back to Conti's Cheers |

its probably bent the lip up a bit by itself, not ideal though as its potentially rubbed the paint off and could cause the arch to rust in future.
I would go get it properly rolled, and then ensure the paint is properly sealed/protected to ensure its not going to rust up. |

depends where you are,
But generally between £80 - £100 for a pair and £120 - £140 for all four. I would look to maybe flare them instead to give it a bit of a wider look. |

Although yes the sizes and offsets have pushed the rims out considerably from the OE ones I would potentially just get the alignment checked first just to be sure it's not an issue. If all good then yes just roll the arches and sorted.

Also the new rims have pushed out a further 18.4mm than the 230's.
