Really really sad.

Indycar seems to have more than it's share of serious accidents.

Something has to be done with safety in this sport.....just like how f1 has made serious changes, the Americans should do likewise for driver safety. How many drivers have to be seriously hurt or killed in this case for the officials to wake up??? Makes me ill...

Didn't see this post hence my own;


Daniel Wheldon died yesterday in Las Vegas for the Indy 300 in a 15 car pile-up. Launched into the catch fencing And it ripped the Roll hoop clean off.

He was 88,89,90 British cadet kart champion beating Jenson Button in the process.

1995 won some rounds of the European Formula A championship as well as the World Cup before moving into cars.

He won the Indy Racing league in 2005 along with the Indy 500 that year!

He won this years Indy 500 also!

Tikov, he died because he hit the catch fencing with the cockpit. It took the roll hoop off.

Maybe a re-design of the fencing is needed.

They have done a lot but open wheels cars racing inches apart at 220MPH on a oval is never going to be safe.

Dan went into the catch fence head first and I doubt any kind of safety fencing would make any difference.

This is why I'm saying to adopt a new safety cell structure.....

It was suggested that Indy teams were trying to make changes to their cockpit from 2012 onwards and in line with F1....

Given the fact that the fence does nothing but to protect spectators is a farce in my opinion.

TikoV, Google LeMans 1955 it's a very good reason for the fencing to protect the spectators.

Very sad to hear this news, although I agree with the earlier comments re open wheel racing at these speeds. The drivers don't stand a chance in these circumstances.

I am absolutely devestated. I Remember Dan in karting and following him and wanting him to succeed in F1, which unfortunately didnt happen but he would have succeeded if he had made it. He was a superstar racing driver and I still cannot believe he has gone.

I didn't know untill 6am Monday morning when my Mother text me the awful news.

After reading the news myself Monday morning, I went upstairs to find on the landing a karting magazine from 1995 which he graced the front cover for winning the World Cup.I had left it out after reading it just the other week

It's so tough to understand when somebody is gone that quickly. Dan was always a very happy guy; he was always smiling. He was a funny, great person that touched a lot of people. He will be missed."
