Auto dip vs auto dim, heated side mirrors
Sorry if this subject has been covered, but I haven't been able to find any solid info.
I called my local dealership to find out if I have "auto-dimming mirrors" and he responded with a confused tone and then asked "You mean, auto-dip?". Anyway, he looked up my VIN and said that I do have auto DIP. However, when I go to bavauto.com or pelican parts the only options I can find are auto-dim vs non auto dim. My question is how can I tell if I have auto dip, auto dim, and/or heated? Pelican even has blue glass as an option, I thought they're all blue glass? The mirror for sure tilts down while in reverse, plus the dealer said its auto dip, so I think that solves that. But how to I know about auto-dim and heat? Any why don't bavauto or pelican specify if a mirror is auto dip or not? Or is auto-dip the same as auto-dim? Thanks! |

It's auto dim, not auto dip.. Retarded person at BMW saying that.
Your mirror in the center should turn dark at night, and dim out all headlights behind.

It's auto dim for sure. You can't directly tell they are heated unless you have ice on them and it starts to melt.
Also if you have tints the sensor doesn't get as much light on it; so the auto dimming feature doesn't work as great. You can definitely tell what glass you have by looking at it. "Blue" tinted glass is pretty noticeable compared to the other glass. I have auto dim and heated and the only time I've ever seen them "blue" was in my garage backing out during the day. At night they do get pretty dark and drown out the lights. During the day you can't see any color tint in the mirror they appear normal just like every other cars. Also, you can tell just by looking at the top center of your windshield rear view mirror and see the sensor carefully hidden through the glass. Always blue tint = standard non dimming/heated |

I believe all US cars are heated mirrors regardless of what trim you may have. The heating is activated whenever the HVAC system is set to defrost on the windshield. Hit the button and touch the glass to test if you like.

What you said is hard to duplicate because if it's hot enough outside for it to not turn on automatically, it'd be very hard to notice the mirrors are getting warmer... I can't test it here, only in 4 months... If you care to wait, I'll come back. Lol |

I read somewhere that when you have the heated seats on the mirror heats up too
for example, I was driving home the other night (about a 45 minute drive) with the heated seats on and when I got home I touched the mirrors and they were warm

You can go to www.bmwarchive.org and enter your VIN number and get a build list of all the options installed on your car. Look for the BMW VIN Decoder window on the right of the main page or use the link below.

BMW calls auto-dim auto-dip internally. Could be a German translation thing or European terminology.

Here's a question...I put in my vin and it says I have "Interior mirror with automatic-dip" but nothing about heated side mirrors? I noticed this year that when I put on the heat my mirrors do NOT heat the ice or snow and they are not warm...could it be a fuse or could it be it didn't come with them
EDIT: BTW my mirrors on my 323 don't fold automatically like my 335 B Last edited by KiX1911; 02-16-2015 at 06:21 PM.. |
