Rough idle, smoothness and misfire codes

Back in June, I had CBU cleaning done on my d, and they also replaced the fuel pressure sensor at that time. As soon as I got home, I did the electrical EGR disable, and last month I removed the EGR and cooler entirely, along with installing a DUDMD tune. I have been occasionally getting smoothness regulator or zero adaptation codes.

Starting yesterday, my idle most (but not all) of the time has gotten very rough. On-throttle is very smooth, but the car shakes like crazy at a stoplight. It regularly throws smoothness regulator codes for cylinder 1, and occasionally also smoothness for cylinder 3 and misfire detection for cylinder 1.

Sometimes though, it idles just fine. I don't have a rhyme or reason as to when it works normally and when it doesn't.

My first thought (and easiest to test) is suspect fuel. Once I get down to 1/4 tank (I'm pretty close), was going to add some diesel kleen (which I normally only use during the winter) and fill up again. Assuming that makes no difference, where do I go next?

Fresh fuel filter? If yes, double dose with Hot Shots Diesel Extreme or even triple dose and see if it goes away after a tankfull. You can also check your injectors via ista

Check injector adaptation values. How old is MAF?

I don't think I have the equipment to check the injector adaptation values, so I'd have to take it to a shop. But fair point, when I had the CBU done, my JBD was on the car (set at 100%). Now it isn't, since I have the ECU tune. Would it be a worthwhile test to turn the JBD down all the way and put it back on?

MAF is original.

I'm positive it's not bad fuel at this point. Reason being, 95% of the time when I stop, the engine is shaking. But that one time out of twenty that it doesn't? It will never start shaking, no matter how long I sit. Not until I move again.

So here are the codes:

00459C Smoothness regulator cylinder 1
004596 Smoothness regulator cylinder 3
004CE1 Misfire detection cylinder 1
004AD5 Zero quantity adaptation injector cylinder 1
004B73 Engine ventilation heating, control

Sure looks like something going on with Cylinder 1. When I had the carbon cleaning done at the dealer, they drove the car almost 100 miles (a tech took it home) then connected up to the computer where BMW corporate remotely reset the injector adaptation values. At the time the local dealer did not have the ability or knowledge to do this. As this was 5 years ago, don't know if things have changed since then.

So just for grins, I put the JBD back on and tried it at minimum (70% if memory serves) and 100%, just idling in the driveway. No change.

Next question: the master tech at my local indy is on vacation until next Wednesday. I'm out of town most of next week, but need to get around the next few days. Am I risking damaging anything by driving the car in this condition?

A complete CBU cleaning includes new injectors. You might evaluate a little further based on mileage. But once they get dirty like that, EVERYTHING gets dirty. Then you chase the after effects through the emissions system.

Ugh. So unless you're buying used injectors ($600+ each new), one should expect CBU cleaning to be $4k?

Does it really?? What docs do you have to support this?

Not sure where that number is, but IIRC, dealer invoiced something like $2300 for cleaning and injectors on mine a couple years ago.

I suspect you don't RC. Mine was $1350 just for the cleaning 5 years ago when it was covered under the extended warranty. Earlier this year they quoted $2640, again for just the cleaning. Here is the actual text from the quote:

CARBON BLAST INTAKE PORTS, SEND MANIFOLD OUT FOR SONIC CLEAN.

Current injector prices (each):

Autozone: $544
ECS Tuning (BMW): $560
ECS Tuning (OEM): $428
Buyautoparts.com: $365
Partsgeek.com: $363
Tunemyeuro (remanufactured): $380
AutohauzAZ: $390

So the lowest price I can find right now is $2200 just for the injectors. MSRP of the BMW OE part (which is what the dealer would use) is $599.49 ea. If a dealer charged you $2300 a few years ago, I'm guessing it was for a walnut blasting and a bottle of injector cleaner. But no injectors.

Fair enough, but that still isn't a dealer per the original mention of $2300 for cleaning and new injectors.

Back to my previous question though, other than being annoying, is it particularly bad to drive the car a little bit before getting this addressed?

I took it in to my indy today along with one injector in case #1 was bad--thanks for the RockAuto recommendation dmanb2b! Unfortunately, he found that both #1 and #3 are bad, so I just ordered a second injector, and will take it back in once it arrives. Sounds like labor will be around $400 to replace both injectors, re-set all the adaptations and put in a new fuel filter.

Not the best news, but I suppose it isn't the worst either.

Glad to help. $400 doesn't sound bad at all for labor. If you are in IL, you can try reaching out to Bradley Tourt on FB group...he does good work and will travel to your home if needed.

I am in IL, but don't have a FB account. Luckily my indy is a BMW Master Mechanic who worked at a local dealer for 15 years or so, before starting his own shop about 6 years ago that specializes in BMW work. Super honest guy too. He has no issue with me bringing in the injectors, as he freely admits he can't get them that cheaply.

Edit: confirmed labor is $425 for replacing both injectors. That assumes that it doesn't need new gaskets--shouldn't since they were replaced in June, and would be parts only if needed--and that the injectors don't give him a monstrous hard time coming out. But he says he typically only sees that in the X5s, not so much in the 335d's.

It would be foolish to not replace all 6 at this time. Labor adds up quick doing 1 or 2 at a time.

Unfortunately, I'm going to fall into the penny wise, pound foolish category here. This repair brings me to $8k in the past 6 months, on a car that's maybe worth $11k. I just don't have the appetite to make that $9k+, even if it means I have to spend more later.

If another one fails next year, I'll spend the $1500 then to have the other four swapped, even if it would "only" be an extra $1200-1300 to just do it now. If it helps, two were replaced under extended warranty about 50k miles ago, though I don't know which two.

i'm having the exact symptoms as the op. just got carbon cleaning done because i thought thats what it was, but its still doing it. almost exact same codes. pulls smooth on highway, rough idle when stopped.
i have about 120k on the glow plugs, and mechanic suggested glow plugs might be past their interval. thoughts? this car is all oem.
