He bought it in excess and now he's finding out that it's supposedly garbage.

Yes, and this will happen with any other oil dumped in an oil burner as well. They will also fail if there are air leaks in the exhaust pre cat. My sons DD is pushing 26psi of boost, coming up on 70k since tuning. Race cats and WB o2's are still within normal specs. I have WB o2's and race cats on 3 of my cars, and 2 others in the fleet with at or over 200k miles all on original O2's and cats. Cutting open the filter and having an oil analysis done is the only way to really know what is going on in the engine. Understanding filter pressure drop as well as filter media effectiveness is crucial also. For Saabs, WIX Gold and Wally Mart Surtec (even have drain back valve) perform the same and remarkably better than Fram's top filter. I've found similar filter results with my MG (but I run Syntec 5w50 in that). |

Modern gasoline oil formulations have gotten better to a certain degree but they've also gotten worse from another viewpoint and that is wear additives. Not all diesel oils are the same and/or will work well with gasoline engines. Rotella T6 5W-40 is one of the better ones that work well in both gas and diesel engines. |

Will have to check for it.. What's the general consensus on viscosity for the n54? Should we stick with the 0 40,what should I use when it starts warming up here in Ohio?

In summer months I would stay with a 40w as even that can thin out (leading to lower idle oil pressure) on hot days if they are full of boosting or playing. I even bump up to 5w50 on a few of my vehicles in summer. I never use a 30w (even in winter) and I live in the NE. Not even in my big Diesel that holds 22 quarts.
