From cars with cut springs spewing rice and burnt oil out of a fart can?

Yes, and this will happen with any other oil dumped in an oil burner as well. They will also fail if there are air leaks in the exhaust pre cat. My sons DD is pushing 26psi of boost, coming up on 70k since tuning. Race cats and WB o2's are still within normal specs. I have WB o2's and race cats on 3 of my cars, and 2 others in the fleet with at or over 200k miles all on original O2's and cats.
Cutting open the filter and having an oil analysis done is the only way to really know what is going on in the engine. Understanding filter pressure drop as well as filter media effectiveness is crucial also. For Saabs, WIX Gold and Wally Mart Surtec (even have drain back valve) perform the same and remarkably better than Fram's top filter. I've found similar filter results with my MG (but I run Syntec 5w50 in that).

Several years ago the Federal Govt mandated that gasoline powered cars use oil formulations with reduced anti wear additives. In a nutshell it has to do with the lifespan of catalytic converters (I just passed smog with flying colors at 200K). The diesel oils still have the higher levels of the quality anti wear additives than the newer gasoline oils use to have.

Modern gasoline oil formulations have gotten better to a certain degree but they've also gotten worse from another viewpoint and that is wear additives.

Not all diesel oils are the same and/or will work well with gasoline engines. Rotella T6 5W-40 is one of the better ones that work well in both gas and diesel engines.

I saw some bmw approved castrol 0 30 the other day but wouldn't that be a little thin when warm?

+1.. And walmart and Amazon both sell them in the 5 quart containers, usually cheaper than the M1 as well

Will have to check for it.. What's the general consensus on viscosity for the n54? Should we stick with the 0 40,what should I use when it starts warming up here in Ohio?

It's a 30wt oil at operating temperature. The 0W is the start up viscosity. Lower the better.. All your high grade oils offer weights down to 0W.

Yeah.. So it'd be thinner.. The n54 doesn't need thin oil when it's 250 degrees

Edited..

Noob question here. Why is Castrol 5W-30 selling for $40 for 5 quarts on Amazon and 0W-40 selling for $25? Both are Edge Black and LL-01.

Demand... 5W-30 is sold about 10X to 1, compared to a 0W-30/40

Interesting, based on this thread's logic, the M1 I have in my garage is still good then, it has the LL-01 and was from the summer of 2015.

That is quite the price difference. Is there any advantage to even getting the 5W-30 Castrol then?

Realistically, NO... If you live in the south, then a 5W-30 would provide a small bit more heat protection, but very marginal.

In summer months I would stay with a 40w as even that can thin out (leading to lower idle oil pressure) on hot days if they are full of boosting or playing. I even bump up to 5w50 on a few of my vehicles in summer. I never use a 30w (even in winter) and I live in the NE. Not even in my big Diesel that holds 22 quarts.
