Hey looks real good ! Thanks for sharing your conversion with us !
I would be interested in sourcing a similar 2.35 or 2.56 diff for my 2009 335d , along with the Wavetrac install sometime in the future. Can you PM me ? |

Well so much for updating regularly
Long story short, the manual swap has been a success, the car runs and drives, I've put over 6000km on it since the swap with no hiccups. Now for some pictures! Who says e90's aren't practical? Took the pieces of the diff into work to press the pinion back into the carrier. Differential all put back together. In the process of install I realized that I had replaced the worst pinion bearing, but the other bearing also has some grit, and I will be replacing it as well in the near future. LUK flywheel and Clutchmasters kit ready to go. The old pilot bearing and clutch pivot pin, I installed the steel OEM pivot pin from an E31. Blew out a tire on a lovely summer morning drive. I luckily had an extra 255/35r18 kicking around that I put on while I waited for new tires. The 335d shows its practicality once again. Here you can see Nova Scotia's first diesel BMW meet, with only one running diesel BMW. Fresh off the boat from Germany, manual e39 530d touring a friend bought with plans to drive it all the way back to Ontario. Didn't make it 100km before the DDE gave out. Towed him in to the nearest town, we'll have to get these two cars together again. Bought a set of Indy 500's. Love them, highly recommended. I also made sure to add another 100hp before the swap got completed. Differential pictured (duh), exhaust and driveshaft already pulled. I ended up doing the swap in my garage, on jack stands. Decided it was easier that way, only needed a second set of hands to install the transmission, did everything else by myself. Transmission separated from engine, thought about putting a wood block under the pan, but it didn't need it. Automatic flex plate, you can see the clutch master-slave line dangling on the left, as well as a hint of the auto transmission. Clutch and flywheel installed. Guess who didn't replaced the rear main seal? this guy. Pressure plate installed. Interior of the car coming together. Pedals installed. Hardware is all done. Had KasselPerformance reprogram the DDE, and then code the car remotely. It was absolutely surreal driving this car with a manual transmission for the first time. Then I did something I've been wanting to do the whole time I've owned the stupid thing, I took it on a road trip! It's no pavement princess. Here are a couple other nice pictures of the car. And if anyone wants to know what the car sounds like: The main notable issue with the car is that cruise control is inop. Kassel Performance has never bothered to attempt to get cruise working on the cars they've coded, and I went in knowing this. I haven't had time to dig into coding and VO rewriting, so it's fallen down the priority list. I see no reason why it would not be possible to get it working. There's still a lot left to do to finish this car off, and like most project cars it won't really have an end. I have a RacingDiffs LSD conversion kit on the way, which will be going in sometime over the winter, as I am winter driving this car at least some of the year. To summarize the future plans: Most immediately Rear subframe replacement (surface rust) RacingDiffs LSD conversion kit Differential pinion bearing replacement All rear subframe bushings replaced during replacement, both upper rear control arms will be replaced at some point as well Rear toe arms (bearing style) Lots of other stuff I'd like to do, but I'll start there and see where it takes me. Thanks for following along everyone! Can't wait to keep racking up the kilometers and enjoying every one of them. |

Great thread and nice work! Love seeing these updates. There must be a story to the tire blowout? As a Michelin guy I took a flyer on set of Indy 500s for the rear and I love them. Wish you the best on the rear subframe, just completed mine in the spring. Keep the updates rolling.

In lengthy discussions and trials at getting the cruise working we've discovered that the manual 330d in Europe uses a different DDE than the USA 335d. And the transmissions we used don't have a gear input signal. When one of the prior tuners I used tried to make everything work, he had set the transmission byte in the DDE to a non-valid value, but during that time the cruise worked 80% of the time. I guess the value he used was for some sort of automatic and not manual because what I found was that it would not auto-cancel once you depressed the clutch. With the byte now set properly, cruise won't work at all. It seems like a tall order to get it working which is a shame because I use it all the time when driving but in any case, let's hope someone makes progress. Otherwise, great to read your progress and see it's similar to mine, including a long road trip included.
