Your car looks great.

I also have a 320D, so will be following your thread with interest, though mine is only a 2010.

Still nicer as a daily than my 2006 Landcruiser diesel and 1/2 the price for running costs, tyres, fuel, oil change etc.

Thanks - the e92 must be a revelation after driving a cruiser as a daily. I enjoy mine on the daily grind.

My free service package is about to run out so I'll be taking on all maintenance later this year.

So onwards with the maintenance part of the thread. As I'm having some time off work, decided to do my transmission & diff oil service. Giving the relatively new Redline MT-LV a try as the Redline fluids have always served my e30 well There was no sticker on my gearbox, but presumably being a 2013 it needs LT-3, so the MT-LV is very similar in viscosity. The old gearbox oil was pretty black and nasty looking so it's good to have some fresh fluids in there (the diff oil still looked good, so probably could have lasted a while yet). I'm at 87,000 km now.

It was actually 1 too many I Only needed 1 bottle of the 75W90 for the diff, but that's ok - have a spare for next time or can use it next time I need to change the diff oil in the e30 (although the e30 LSD is nearly the size of a gearbox & it takes more oil than the gearbox does in the e92).

I got a chance to do some more wrenching this weekend and sorted a hot running issue on the e30 - when hot the car seemed to lose its timing and run really rough. I tracked the problem down to the crank angle sensor, so modern BMWs aren't only ones to have sensor issues! Mind you the sensor looked like it was still original so it was around 32 years old. I fitted a new one, reset the DME and all was back to normal.

Before taking the e30 for a test run, I put both my cars out on the street to swap them around in the driveway. I still find it funny how much the e92 dwarfs the e30. The e30 puts a smile on my face every time I drive it, but the fuel economy of the 3.5L is pretty sobering at between 14 - 17L/100km urban depending on how happy I am with my right foot. On a recent road trip in the 320d we got 4.7L/100km with the car fully loaded up with 4 people + luggage!

Service time. Just doing an interim oil service between the ones indicated by the condition based indicator + some new wiper blades.

Why can't BMW just give in and sell oil in 5L bottles!

Had a bit of a laugh tonight - found myself driving the e92 on Google Maps. I thought I saw a Google car in the distance recently, so had a look where I thought I saw it and there I am!

Going to start on a new e30 project car. Went to have a look at it today - complete barn find. At the moment it's a rolling shell with a large number of extra parts thrown in. Will be a longterm slow burn project.

lol... yes - it's a lot straighter than it looks covered in dust, and is virtually rust free but it certainly won't buff out

Have to get the car back to my place, then decide on a colour to paint it.

Went to the farm today and pulled my e30 project out of the shed where it has sat for 10 years. Cleaned up pretty well, the car is straight with only minor body / rust repairs needed. The ride height is comical with no driveline - it doesn't even have a fuel tank!

Solid basis for a project & makes the e92 look enormous!

Back to the e92 maintenance part of the thread.

Around a week ago I started getting an intermittent check engine light, so I got hold of a Carly scanner to check codes. The car is running fine.

Anyway - the car had various EGR codes when I checked it, so I removed the EGR valve to give it a clean thinking it was probably sooted up. Anyway it wasn’t too bad, so I gave it a quick clean and put it back in.

This appeared to fix the problem for a few km, but now it’s still throwing a 004CAE code (Exhaust gas recirculation actuator position sensor signal). Would this suggest I need a new EGR valve given that the sensor is integrated into the valve? The wiring looks undamaged, and the car is still running fine there is just the little engine light on the dash.

If you've got ISTA, you can just run the automatic test for the EGR and it will tell you if it's ok or not. The EGR valves can be quite problematic.

Edit: also it's probably worth mentioning that there is a current recall for EGR coolers, so might be worth checking if yours falls into the recall. They quite often replace the EGR cooler and EGR valve as a complete unit.

Thanks Eva - I’ll check out the recall & probably order a Bimmergeeks cable so that I can run ISTA.

In the meantime I’ve ordered a new EGR valve from Schmiedmann as they’re pretty cheap to replace & will put that in to see whether it solves it.

Hi Socket

Nothing too substantial yet on the project car. I stripped the engine harness out of the engine bay and then gave it a clean up to see what I’m dealing with and went on a bit of a rust hunt.

The battery tray needs replacing, I’ve already sourced a replacement panel from Valcas Garage.

Stripped out the interior - the dash is actually not too bad, but the steering column has been butchered. Fortunately I have a spare steering column with electrics from a low km car I wrecked a while ago. Don’t think that carpet will clean up . The floor itself is solid though.

When I removed the boot interior panels I found the car has had a hit in the rear that has been quite poorly repaired, so I’ll have to order a new rear panel and have it welded in when I get it painted. I’m going to tackle rust in the firewall & battery tray area myself, but I think I’ll leave welding in the rear panel to the pros.

You can see the odd gap just above the rear bumper. Ok for a ’survivor’ maybe, but will definitely need to be fixed properly for paint. The inside of the boot has some rust from the poor repair.

Fixed the EGR valve today on the e92 - bled the cooling system, and seems to have solved the sensor / valve issue (new valve circled).

The vanity covers back on and it’s all back to normal.
