Exploring ideas on external gear indicator

Hello, had a slight project possibility I wanted need a bit of guidance on, hoping some brains on this forum can help me out

I was wondering if it was possible to rig up a tiny screen (as in 1" x 2") to create a secondary gear indicator light that mirrors the one in our dash cluster.
I have an auto so this would need to read out P/R/N/D/S/1-6

I researched a bit on Arduino stuff but a lot of the information assumes a 'from scratch' approach where you'd need to create the input signal. But since our cars already have that exact functionality from factory, I was trying to figure out if it was possible to just piggy back off it to output to the second screen

If you just get XHP transmission tune, it will indicate the gear while in D mode. I am not 100% sure, but I also think this can be done by coding.

Yes I'm aware, I already run the XHP tune. My intent here is to run a secondary screen readout

You probably want to setup the Arduino as a CAN bus sniffer, because, as you say, the car already knows which gear its in.
