I would never recommend that a 16 year old drive a BMW unless you're a trust fund baby. At your age, you should drive something that is easy to afford, maintain and on the level of your driving capabilities.

I don't think your plan of showing your dad a thread with selective answers from a bunch of internet e90post thugs is gonna convince him..

We all know that potential issues that pop up at the worse time. I owned an E46 for nearly seven years and an E92 for over two, so I have a little history with BMW’s. All was well for two years until recently when the water pump died and a minor incident happened. A $2200 bill wasn’t necessarily a surprise but I don’t know if a 16 year old could handle that along with car payment, insurance and other costs.

I had a 335i when I was 18. Didn't really account for needing tires right after buying it and it had a warranty to cover like 4 grand of work right after buying it. I also slid it into a curb. 5 years later- was it worth it? Probably, but not a chance without that extended warranty.
Its going to need at minimum a water pump, and a few gaskets by 75k. $$$. No offense but you'll probably crash it.

Wouldn't recommend a 300+hp RWD car for a 16 year old. Start with a E46 330i ZHP or 328i to get a feel and taste of BMWs. The power and torque is more controllable for someone who just started driving. You'll need to learn basics like driving it in the rain, counter steering, etc. And that's not something you want to do with a N54 or N55.

i wouldn't own a german car unless you had a job. i would suggest a japanese or korean car, maybe a 4-5yr old camaro or mustang if you want something more sporty.

The N54 motor needs a lot of TLC. You will be constantly be maintaining it. I know. I've had one for 10 years. Trust me. Get a clunker with a lot of steel in front of you..... |

C'mon, you know a BMW 335is isn't a good car for a 16 year old. Especially a 335is. And this is coming from someone who had a brand new supercharged American car as his first car at the age of 16. That wasn't a good car for a 16 year old either. I honestly knew that at the time too but of course I didn't complain.
A 335is is way more expensive to buy and incredibly expensive to maintain. At 45,000 miles, you'll likely be looking at your first maintenance bill of $1,500-$2,000 to replace the water pump and thermostat (unless you or your dad replace it yourself). That will happen within the next 15,000 miles (most of them fail when the car hits 60k). Plus you'll need your oil change then too lol got a lot of power and RWD. Definitely not the safest thing to learn how to drive on. There are so many other awesome cars out there which I'm sure you'll end up loving.. What is it about the 335is you like so much? |

Surprised by the negativity but I agree on some aspects, I am 17 and I have owned a 2009 n54 for 6 months now. And yes I didn't pay for it in full but I did pay for 3,000 of it which was around 1/3 for it. I work around 16 plus hours a week and I am going to say it is expensive, I sometimes had to take a paycheck and directly put it into repairs for my car. Another aspect would be the cost of gasoline, do you have a far commute? Do you have money for maybe a fill up every week or every 5-6 days? My first car for around a year (some say you can not drive till 16 but in my state, you start at 15 1/2) with my dad's old ford escape which was an interesting car. As others have mentioned maybe it is best not to start with the 335i because it is very expensive to maintain and fast. My opinion is to go for it if you work and are willing to put your own expenses into the car, but if this is paid for only by your dad, do him a favor and buy something older and more reliable.

your dad is completely right.
especially if he's the one that has to pay for it, and it's subsequent maintenance/repair. you know what solves this problem? getting a job and having your own money, then you can buy anything you like. When I was 16 I bought my own car, paid for my own repairs/gas/insurance. |
