Some guys had them on in October!

What a waste of quarter of a year of driving but as soon as they take them off it will snow.

Small article in this weeks Autocar about swapping onto winters for their long term 1M.

Michelin Alpins seem to provide a far few positives on how the baby M car rides, steers etc on the smaller diameter, narrower winter rubber.

Journo Steve Sutcliffe seems to prefer it on the winter setup........

Saw it last week in his blog, the man is learning.

Seriously, it shows how much many put up with, thinking they are getting a better, more sporty drive, on rubber bands.

Looks like this... after the first trip out, we had over 6" of the stuff that day. December 2011.

That's what happened to me! Went for winters in 225/45/17 to keep costs down and knowing this was the standard summer size for the car anyway since it is a - what did someone call them on here - "boat-handling mere SE"?

The steering feel, handling balance, ride, refinement, and even fuel consumption were so much better I immediately sold the 18's. When I went to summer tyres on the narrower size they were better still!

I love the balance of my car and would not want stiffer suspension or wider tyres for road use - and that as someone who, ahem, "presses on". The M-sport does look a bit better, 18's do look a bit better, but my personal theory is that cars are for driving, not looking at. They certainly are for the mileages I do, anyway.

Autocar are on record saying they prefer the handling of SE to M Sport 3 series, and 17's to 18's, anyway so this is not a departure for Mr SS.

I still think the M-Sport I had on 17's was the perfect combo, it rode so damned nicely.
However, I swapped for 19s within 24 hours and ruined all that!!

Our X1 on 245.45.17 non run flats is a dream though, I actually got them to swap the nice looking 18" wheels for some 17s when I bought it as the 18s had run flats again.

Having driven otherwise identical SE and MSport models back to back, I'd agree completely. The SE suspension is, IMO, way too soft. I would imagine it's supposed to be for relaxing motorway comfort, but to me it just felt vague and floaty.

MSport suspension gives the required body control, but with 17" tyres it loses the harshness.

And to think people were putting these on back in early Nov. AND that they were attempting to say that the only reason i didn't think winters were worth the bother was because i couldn't afford them.

Do these people accept now that they were massively overreactive when it came to winters tyres? I doubt it. They'll probably have some lame excuse as to why they believe they are still correct Nevermind, at least they'll be feeling some benefits from them from the passed 2 days of the coldest temperatures we've had this winter. Bad news is that by tomorrow afternoon the temperature will be back to 12-13c in the majority of England. Definitely worth that £500-700 most of you spent. And the hassle of having to change them over. And the fact that people on winter tyres have had grip akin to LingLong tyres as they have been driving around in temperatures of 10c+ for the passed 2 months in mostly dry conditions.

It is soft, but for some reason when you hit a speed bump or poor road surface it doesn't soak up the shock as well as the m-sport set up.
So no benefit at all.

Briers, have you had any luck getting to the bottom of the TC problem? I've been switching between summers/winters for 3 years now and I get exactly the same problem as you.
From my experience it's nothing to do with the temperature or road conditions or driving beyond your/your car's limits, there's some kind of technical issue that upsets the TC when I switch from 255 summers to 225 vred wintac xtremes.
On a stretch of road I can switch the TC into DTC mode and there's all the grip you'd ever need. Leave the TC on though and it interferes constantly. For example I can put the cruise control on at 60 and if I try accelerating with the cruise control stalk that's enough to get the TC flashing and deactivate the c-control - that's really not heavy acceleration!

Frustratingly it's not like that all the time, some days it's fine, other days in identical road/weather conditions it'll barely give me 10% power.

For reference I'm no stranger to winter driving, living on a hill farm in the peak district we get 11 months of winter and 1 month of bad weather. Thats enough snow & ice driving in a whole range of cars and tyres to know that this TC problem isn't me pushing the vreds beyond their limits, there's a gremlin somewhere in the TC system that doesn't like this set up.

Cheers

FD

I have mentioned before that the TC is very sensitive to tyre type and tread depth.

As my summers were wearing, the dry grip levels were if anything better (as you'd expect) but as the tread depth went down the TC intervened less and less even slightly over the limit - starting to allow small slides as if DTC mode was on.

With winters I have always noted a tendency for the TC to intervene too early. As a result I always switch DTC mode on when pressing on with winters. It's weird because with DTC mode on, or everything off, there is plenty of grip - it is not that the tyres simply lack grip, they seem to confuse the electronic brain into thinking there is less grip than there is.

I only tend to notice this on corner exits, but then I have a lot less torque at low revs than a 330d...

Not me, 1°C this morning. Snow line down quite low again. Was -4°C last week, with black/sheet ice on the roads.

Some of you guys need a real winter.

Tell me about it! Keeping an eye on Metserve there seems to be uncertainty about whether there will be ICE/Snow.. but knowing how quickly it can change might need to run them little long still.

I've not even put mine on at all this year, they're still in the barn...... I 've got a secret winter weapon now though........a Bipper Van (pic below)!!

Brilliant - light, fast, front wheel drive, chunky tyres, goes and grips on all sorts, so the BM can stay nice and warm indoors - best place for it when the weather is bad..

Remember Jan and Feb are the coldest months, on avergae of course... you'd be better just waiting - or you know what will happen!
