Do you *need* the cable w/ updated firmware? Technically no, but we have concerns about the safety/reliability of the standard D-CAN cables. It's not a big deal when flashing stock files since if something gets transmitted wrong, the security access error will occur and prevent the DME from permabricking.

When flashing modified tunes, we have to bypass the security, which also bypasses that safety mechanism. So it's best not to deal with potential corruption issues. Hass and I have already each bricked one DME with no way to recover. Not a big deal when you're paying ~$40 on eBay for a bench module. But it is a big deal with a real car.

If you have an ICOM, that should work fine.

we could also just modify your cable, but by the time you ship it back and forth it's probably easier to just buy a new one (which isn't all that expensive really).

So are you thinking about a dyno day sometime soon? Where?

I think I have been on every dynojet in town at some point. Zfever (nice guys, but didn't send me the files I wanted) Proven Power and the other muscle car shop here in St Pete.

I will probably be using Proven Power, familiar with the shop, and it's local to me. Need to get my clutch/02 sensors in first...

Ya, I'd like to get my transmission tune sorted and then spend a few hours on a dyno sometime before hit 200,000 miles.

Will any of these cables work? So which one do I need to buy?
I think that the latest version is the last 2 with the switch. Is that correct? And then there is the ICOM cable.

the cables are physically fine - it's the firmware that is the issue.

there will be "updated" cables at a reasonable price available - and as we aren't 100% ready to start sending out custom stuff anyway, I wouldn't rush.

Virtually every D-CAN cable on the market (possibly even including the expensive one-stop-electronics cable) has mildly faulty firmware. I haven't heard of it bricking an MSV80, but they definitely have bricked other modules. Now in your case, since your car is a 2007 model, it might have a K-line JBE, in which case the firmware doesn't really matter as far as safety goes (though it still has other benefits).

E9x users shouldn't need a switched cable. That's only really useful on earlier cars.

Should also mention: I'm still looking for a tester with a 128i or 328i with a stock DME who has a familiarity with the various BMW diagnostic software and general computer knowledge. Ideally with a 3-stage manfold already installed or soon to be installed, but that's not really necessary to ensure the software doesn't have any major bugs.

Look forward to that. Thanks.

I'm still planning to meet a dstrictland, who's local to me - if you want to verify my "custom" file will flash without bricking (now that we have a working 0da generator).

Well I don't have much concern about bricking at this point (I've seriously flashed back and forth at least 30 times), I just don't know if we'll run into something weird like those rom level 2 errors, a strange drivability issue, or some other error because of a byte that shouldn't have been flipped or vice versa. I'm 99% sure everything will be fine, but if it's not, I'd rather only have to deal with troubleshooting with 1 person who knows what they're doing than 10+ people who don't even know what a byte is.

Dstrickland is a good bet for this but I thought he runs an MSV70 and is closer to the East coast.

I was planning on meeting and flashing his car personally. As long as the flash works i can do whatever needs to be done - I've flashed my own car enough times to be confident with the process.

In that case just flash one of the RSA deletes (I've personally tested the "full" one more, but the parameter-only one worked fine too) and the "330i" tune and see if the car starts / runs properly I guess.

There $45. Sounds expensive for a cable, but Hass can walk you through what's required to get them upgraded(PAIN), we've invested money in more than just the cables themselves to get them upgraded. The extra $10 goes a long way towards not bricking your DME.

Another note: The cables we're advertising right now(switched and non switched) don't have the upgraded software for flashing their custom security bypass files. The upgraded cables will be the switched(easiest to upgrade due to differences in the board) with the modified firmware.

So we will essentially have 3 cables available, non switched, switched & upgraded switched. Prices are are $35,$40,$45 in that order.
Do you have upgraded switched cables yet?

At least as far as the "stock" 130i/330i/530i tunes go - they are pretty much ready, but I'd really like for there to be at least one car to test driveability on before wide release. And ideally that tester would have some basic technical knowledge.
