I never paid for CPO to begin with.....on any of my cars

If you are worring about taking a hit on the value of your car, the best thing to do is to keep it. If you keep trading in your car every few years, you will lose most of the value on your cars.

Like others have pointed out, the longer you keep it, the less damage is done. The newer it is when you buy it, the steeper the curve.

If your only motivation to trade the car in is that you are worried about depreciation, you're thinking about it backwards. Just enjoy your car.

As many people have mentioned, cars are not investments and thus will rarely increase in value. If you use it, the value will drop. Additionally, cars are still being manufactured and improved and thus are not in limited supply. Property is finite thus value can increase based on supply and demand.

If you want a car that doesn't depreciate as fast, go with a Honda...

I was just out looking at Hondas with a friend and the used ones were only 3k cheaper than the new ones. 2010-12 10k-15k miles vs 2012....

It could be worse, you could be a Canadian. 08 335xi with 22000kms (divide by 1.6) cost me about $45k in 2010. Now it's worth between $18 - $21k with 140,000 Kms.

It has been (and still is) a blast to drive though

OP: Sell the car and buy a new one every 2 years. Keep the economy going At least you didn't buy it new like I did. By the time I need a new motor or tranny, the parts and labor will cost more than the car will be worth

You rarely save money in the long run by trading cars, unless you're going to be downgrading to a cheaper or older car.
This ^^^

It's a losing battle really. I've been there and have done that. You can minimize the loss of course by trying to get the best deal possible when you buy the car initially. Echoing everyone else's sentiments, just enjoy driving the heck out of her. You've had her for only a short time and already thinking about selling/trading?

I would get rid of it as fast as you can. There are thousands of these things around. Unfortunately BMW GIVES them away at the end of every year thus devaluing existing cars. The new 4 series is coming and that combined with brutal reliability and expensive service on current 3 series will only drive prices down...in my opinion.

My 09 (on road on Jan 2010) with 83,000 kms (51,000 miles) is worth about $25,000. Perfect shape and has everything but nav. List was $60,000ish.

Yeah it sucks. You paid way to much for an 08 though, it should have been a fully loaded w/ every possible option CPO vert for that price. Anyways, it doesn't matter anymore, just enjoy your car.

Enjoy the car, get to FBO level like I have with my 2008 335xi and you will never want to sell it. I just can't stop modding this car, it's so much fun!!!

Plus you have an N54!!!! You can do a lot more with it then the N55's. Who knows, you might be kicking yourself in a few years like all those people who sold their '93+ 6-speed turbo supra's after their 3 year leases were up back in the days! All I can say is, my car has an 8yr/80k miles warranty on the stock turbo's (Then its time for some RB Turbo's), CPO till Nov '13, and 10yr/120k warranty on the HPFP. Other then that... all I need to do is change the battery when it dies and change the water pump when it dies (everything else is rock solid or a simple DIY that someone else has written up already).

I am Albertan, we pay a bit more for some reason. I am looking for a CPO right now and I've found prices are always cheaper in Ontario and Quebec.... economy of scale perhaps, I'm not sure

I checked the invoice, just under $43 all in for the 08 CPO in 2010. It has everything but Nav

If you are only worried about depreciation I would say get a lease. I think leasing a car if you have good credit is worth it in many cases.

You don't have to worry about many things, car under warranty, and over the course of 3 years the money you pay is more or less the depreciation you would have if you were to buy the car. Plus many times they give you $500-$1000 in small damages and dings you can turn the car in with.

I bought my 2011 from a dealer in May 2012 with 5800 miles and gave 1K more than you did. They do depreciate but the closer you can buy to wholesale (invoice if buying new) the less hit you take.

Value and Car do not go together.

Appreciating expense and Car do however.....

The problem for all of us driving BMW's is that while the company continues to set sales records, they are flooding the marketplace with BMW's to the point where they are like Honda's. This creates a problem in the resale market and that is a major reason why BMW across the board has experienced lower residual values. You see it in lower residual calculations on BMW leases now and a flood of used ones for sale.
