330d Garrett Turbo condition question
Just done main and egr thermostats and as you have to remove the turbo cold air feed hose, I thought i'd check out the turbo condition whilst i was in there.
1. If i zoom in on the blades i can see some saw tooth wear near the tips. Is that to be expected at 110k? 2. There's about 1mm of side play (radially) but no in/out axial play on the shaft. That normal? 3. All blades seem to have oil/carbon build up. Normal? 4. The turbo inlet hose i took off had a bit of oil in the bottom of it - the bit that sits over the turbo housing intake. Normal? Thanks guys! Pic AND video below. Video sharpens up about 2/3 way in: View My Video

I ran a 2007 330d xdrive (heavier and more solicited) for a year with 220000 km and there was a little oil around the turbo. Mate (Who is a pro mechanics and high grade at that) said it was normal and nothing to worry about. Car ran beautifully and boosted like a MF. Much boostier than an N57...

Remember that the cam cover breathers suck oil / vapour from the cam cover back down into the intake (pre-turbo), which is likely what that film of oil is.
Fitting an oil catch can should reduce / stop this.
