never look at rpm,,its about knowing your car..especially a derv..you know when to change when giving it some..its a feel thing..leave it too late and hang onto gears and your going backwards..

*N54
*2009 *6mt *Petrol *Normally anywhere between 2 and 3k when cold. Anywhere between 2 and 7k when hot and depending on how I feel like driving. If on a motorway sliproad I'd use redlines as intended. *Depends on driving. Low of 20mpg round town, High 40mpg on a long run. Average 25/26mpg |

2010 DCT Petrol Usually leave car in D for commuting, it shifts between 1.5-2k. Average is 26mpg but current commute doesn't allow engine to warm up properly so most of the journey and that mpg figure is based on an engine not at operating temps. |

2500 rpm max if cold, so leave it in D and the box shifts around 1500-2500. When it's hot I usually stretch it's legs and anything up to redline (7000) especially on the motorways. Making progress on the streets when safe to do so around 4000-4500. |

* engine model
* Year * gearbox type * fuel type * RPM SHIFT *MPG figure 335i (3 litre twin turbo) 2009 DCT petrol 21mpg average If I'm driving sedately then then anything over 2000 rpm. If I'm driving as fast as possible then redline, anywhere near 7000 rpm (Got upgraded turbos and port meth injection) If I want to drive fast but not mentally fast then anything over 5500 rpm Can do 38 mpg in the 50 zones when at a steady speed.

The 35i averages could be sitting in lots of traffic, where the M3 sits in much less. It may be a good guide, but it's no where near accurate enough for a true comparison.

The M3 is not that great on the motorway. It has much shorter gearing than the DCT 335i (3.14 vs 2.56) meaning cruise is around 3000rpm |

You need an enthusiast owned car with either sub 60k miles (for warranty) or all the big ticket items replaced. Even then, things like waterpumps may need doing more than once. Same goes for the HPFP. If you have your heart set on a tourer, you'll have more luck winning the lottery.

Indeed, they do rev well for a diesel..... a mate of mine didn't even realise it was a diesel when I took him out for a blast, it was only when he got out of the car he twigged the engine note (and the lack thereof!).
