ELV Steering Lock Fault
Ok, so I had this come up on my car yesterday:
Car is 2006, 56 reg, and done about 70k. No warranty on it. Looking into this online, it appears to be a common fault, but I am seeing mixed messages about if the steering column needs replacing, or if the car just needs new coding (meaning it is a software glitch). Car starts and runs fine. Does anyone have experience of this? Anyone know what the lock actually does/what it is meant for? What can I do to resolve this?

Reset it yourself?
Any other electrical gremlins at the same time? I am wondering if the battery might be playing up.

When I reset it at first just with quick delete of fault it come back only
Removed After second try, but it took much longer. System was doing something. Probably telling to ECU is no fault. What I notice is after I remove key and don't lock doors and sit back to car and put key in slot ELV is not engaging straight away and it takes up to 3seconds. In situation like mine and yours I thinking is not ELV, but KEY slot. But it gives fault as ELV. |

Had this issue a while back, accompanied with some rather nasty crunching when the lock applied on removal of the key. Software update from indy, no more issue. |

I am afraid you need to replace or fix your Steering Wheel Column. I had this issue about 6 yrs ago but had it replaced under warranty.

The thing that makes me think it is not just software is the fact that it only just started to happen out of the blue, and I would have thought that a software glitch would have been around from day 1. Given it is a 2006 car, I am not sure how recent the software in the car is and for the money, that might be a good place to start.

I had this fault last year and it went away by itself. I remember that i used the spare key for some reason and thats when the problem began. After a few days of clicking and warning lights it disapeared.

Right, came back from holiday and now the symbol is red, and the car wont start. Anyone know how the goodwill process with BMW goes? Do you need to get the car to a dealer first, get it looked over, and then approach BMW to see if they will assist?
Heard a few cases of parts supplied free, and you only need to pay labour.

Forget it without then - last service just before I bought the car was indy. My other two BMWs are full BMWSH though, wonder if I get seen as a valued customer?
Whats the cost of a new column and fitting, anyone had it done?

You can only ask. I would have thought that BMW would be disinterested in a 7 year old car with no extended warranty that's been serviced elsewhere but you never know. Nothing to lose by asking.

Get the software updated from local indy.
That should resolved on most 05-07 cars. If you need used steering column, then give me a shout. I may have one lying around somewhere.

Cool. Getting it towed over there today, once the indy check it out, will give you a call if I need one - what model is it for, and new or used?

2 minutes after the car arrived at the indy and was plugged into the system, they had the steering unlocked. It wouldn't start due to an apparent battery error, and is now on the ramp. They are going to check it over and let me know what they think the issue is, but suggestions from them at this stage is that is looks like a software issue between a few modules.
As for fixing when it was yellow, I just never got round to it - and many people advised that it was not a major issue.
