E91 Finally need to replace sunroof liner
Looking online there isnt much information on it just kind of comments here and there. Its just my FRONT liner panel, its coming loose.
One method I see mentioned is to remove the entire headliner and the sunroof mechanism to work on it but havent seen any detailed DIY. Has anyone seen some more detailed ones for the E91? Tons for the regular sedan with the push back sunroof but a dearth of info on the powered shade for the E91. |

Look up the x3/5 pano roofs, too. Iirc, they are very similar just different dimensions.

Yeah I kind of dug online but couldnt really find a whole lot outside of the rebuild procedure, which the one person who did it did that with the entire assembly removed and on a bench.
If thats the case I guess Id want to go ahead and buy the repair kit and the rear shade too because that seems like a PITA. |

Can have it removed in 10 minutes or less.
You’d figure I have photos of it with the times I’ve done it… Removing the entire headliner won’t do anything for the cover. Put the sunroof in the tilted up position (via sunroof switch) and open the sunshade all the way back. From the inside, remove 2 accordion pieces about 1 ft long that hide the front roof glass torx screws. Remove these carefully. The accordion part will rip easily if you pull too hard and the metal ends will also bend. Grab the piece by 1 metal end on the top or bottom and start to remove it. Remove 6 torx screws holding the glass on the track, 3 on each side, I think T20/25. Lift glass out of car. Put the sunroof track in the closed position and slide the shade forward. (Via sunroof switch) From the top outside: Remove 2 brackets on the track that hold the accordion pieces, 1 on each side. These brackets are just pressed into place on the track. Remove 6 torx screws holding the front shade in place, 3 on each side, I think T15. Don’t lose these, they’re tiny and specific to the shade. The 6 exterior torx screws hold on 2 large brackets to the shade. The brackets have 3 legs that sort of slide into the track from the side. Hard to explain but once you see it, you’ll get an idea of how they come out. If just removing the front shade: Pry or lift one bracket out of the track. These brackets have a slot to allow a small arm from the rear shade to slide into. Lift the bracket up and unhook the small rear shade arm. Then just tilt the shade up to the side you removed the single bracket from and slide the shade out. If you’re removing both shades: Remove both large brackets on the front shade Remove front shade Slide rear shade forward as much as it can by hand Remove 4 T10/15 bolts holding the rear shade to a bracket on the track. You can just barely get to the rear screws on the rear shade if you’re using a torx screwdriver, no need to remove rear glass. The rear shade has some spring type rings between the shade itself and its bracket. When you remove the screws holding the rear shade on, slide the springs out and pay attention to how they came out. Tilt the rear shade up a little (by hand) and slide it forward/out. The rear shade screws are also specific to the rear shade only. Installing it is pretty much going backwards. Before you put the glass on, make sure the shades fully open and close using the switch. Then drop the glass into place on the track Loosely install all 6 screws Line up driver front corner and tighten the screw Line driver rear corner Line up pass front Line up pass rear Tighten the center screws once the glass is where you want it to be. Thanks for that write-up!
I am saving it as I want to re-wrap the headliner and the shade in Anthrazit cloth at some point when I tackle M Sportifying my upper interior. |

No problem!
The headliner is just as easy, but takes more time. I’d say 30 minutes to remove with power tools Twice as long installing it though because you need to have everything lined up. Remove c pillar covers Behind the c pillars, there is a small plastic clip that holds the D pillar, remove the clip Remove 6 screws on the D pillar where the cargo cover slides, 3 on each side Remove the battery cover and storage cover in the trunk There is another 4 screws for the d pillar under those covers, 2 on each side. D pillar has white clips holding it to the car, just start removing the d pillar from the top roof side and slide it out of the lower trunk molding The pillars also have electrical connections for the trunk lights Remove b pillar, it just pops off once you remove the lower b pillar cover. Remove A pillars Remove sunvisors/visor retaining clips Remove front dome light-There is 2 plastic push clips under the dome light Remove all 4 grabs handles, use a small pick/flat head to open their access doors Remove 4 cargo cover net hook points If you have logic7, the rear speaker covers just unclip from the speakers Slide sunroof glass back There is 5 T10 screws that hold the liner to the car, only accessible from top outside with the glass open, remove those screws The liner has its own clips(aside front everything else) holding it to the roof, start pulling the liner down/unclipping and slide it out through the back. Install the front 5 T10 screws first then start clipping the liner back into place. Shimmy it around if needed to line up all the rest of the parts. Last edited by Serf27; 11-02-2023 at 11:33 PM.. |

I just went to the dealer, they were the cheapest listing and I suspect ECS/FCP/etc would be doing the same thing (ordering it).
If you found someone who could get it faster Id be willing to pay more but Id be surprised someone has one sitting on a shelf. Im probably going to regret not just buying the rear AND the maintenance kit too. |

If just removing the front shade:
Pry or lift one bracket out of the track. These brackets brackets have a slot to allow a small arm from the rear shade to slide into. Lift the bracket up and unhook the small rear shade arm. Then just tilt the shade up to the side you removed the single bracket from and slide the shade out. For this part is it obvious what you are prying? Pulling screws and whatnot make sense but if Im having to do some prying or bending I want ot make sure Im prying/bending the right thing. When this does go down Ill try and take pictures so I can expand your instructions into a DIY. |

So since it was a month delay I did manage at least to (hopefully) keep it from getting worse by taking the lip that wraps up around the back and using some superglue under it. By kind of pushing it back with a wedge I got it pretty tight. The middle still sags but hopefully that will keep the front lip from coming completely off and snagging or anything.

Ok finally did it and (the front panel at least) is a hell of a lot less intimidating than it seems.
Open the shade all the way, raise the glass to "vent" position to make it easier to remove glass. Pull the accordion cover, remove all of the screws for front and rear glass. Remove glass panels. Then close the shade half way. Now here is the "trick." Make sure you dont do it in a way to actuate the glass else youre gonna trigger the error and then the whole system shuts down. One press and then a timely second press to stop it but make sure it doesnt think its a double press, etc. On the e91 there are these spring screws with a small torx bit: Youll find them on the top of the shade, remove all 6: With those removed and the shade positioned halfway you can slide it forward from under the flat plates that actually drive it and then just slide it foward. Those plates will go up a bit to make it easier: Once youre foward enough you should be able to get it over the front lip and pull out. Slide the replacement in as reverse, just keep an eye on the back to make sure it goes over the lip of the rear one. You might feel a bit of resistance the last .5" as there are spring clips that grab onto it, no biggie just wiggle/push. Once its flush tighten those screws back down (my replacement came with screws), reinstall the glass, tune and calibrate. If you accidentally triggered the error (I did) the only way I was able to get it working again was to put glass back in and recalibrate. If anyone knows of a way to manually operate the shade Im open to ideas, IIRC the motor for that is hidden back under the headliner. I probably should have done the rear too, the foam isnt rebounding quickly like the new one is so it might be due sooner than later but its thankfully not a huge job. |

Sorry yeah I didnt do a good job documenting it. Honestly just grab the DIY from removing the sunroof glass as that is 85% of it. Then just start the process of closing the shade but DONT LET IT GO ALL THE WAY. Stop halfway. That is what got me, I accidentally didn't hit the stop button in time and it pissed off the calibration.
Once you have the shade halfway closed (just enough to get to the screws, its pretty easy. I didn't have to bend anything, just slid it out the front by pulling up on the shade and angling it out. Im sure there is a better way than I did it, this was just the easier way. |

That is some great information! My pano sunshade liner is starting to droop and it's annoying when I had the shad closed. Along similar lines, I am getting more wind noise when the glass is shut but the shade is open. I thought that replacing the seals might help. Has anyone attempted this? Did you replace the seals on the roof frame or around the glass panels or both? Thanks!

It is the sunroof seal on the roof.
The seal was revised in later models and had no issues. It is truly a night and day difference. It is discussed here and in a few other threads. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98021 https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1244098 |
