Unhappy Strange clicking on tickover. N54

Hi all,

I wondered if I may run a strange noise Imgetting on idle in my 335i. Its a 2007 N54 and has covered 127k. Im only its second owner and like to think I look after it woth eegular oil changes and services.

Anyhow firstly over the past 2 months its been getting warm. Once up to temp its creeping up to 110, 115 on the oil temp gauge, but doesnt get any warmer.

Im not exactly sure when this clicking began but it seems quite prominent now and seems to be coming from under the top engine cover (the heads?)

Hope anyone can offer some advice

Sounds like lifter noise from a slightly bent valve or something, worn valve guides/seals possibly, you burning excessive oil by chance?

Thanks for the reply.

Am I burning excess oil, thats a tough one. The way Ive done it since owning the car is when the oil level begins to drop (to about half) I chuck a castrol 1 litre top up in. When it starts to drop again I do a full change and filter. Id say im doing a full change every 3 months? Ive not noticed a difference since owning the car (Ive had her about 1 3/4 years now, nearly 2). I do know this noise wasnt present until 5 or 6 months ago.

Im not massive on mechanics though. What would I need my independant to do if it was a valve issue? Is it a big job? I have some mainance coming up in the next month or twoso could chuck it on the list then...

Is it a massive worry?

Your video ain't working but most n54s make weird ass ticking noises and it's presumed to be normal however some can be problematic.

I've had a loud ticking noise at idle that would go away when u blip the throttle. It ended up being a boost solenoid. It didn't affect the performance at all though. Might wanna look into that.

Post another video

I agree that that is not normal, at least in my experience with the typical N54 clicks.

You never know? My motor makes a similar noise, although I don't have oil loss. You could try this below to see if it helps with the noise. It's safe for turbocharged cars and doesn't effect oil viscosity.

This sounds exactly like your problem. Culprit - injector.
