Upgrade for Dummies - 2020 Maps and generating FCS code

This forum has some great information and unbelievably generous members that share their time and expertise to help fellow BMW owners. I am not a frequent visitor, am not really a Dummy, but have no coding experience and was still able to complete the Navigation Map update to USB 2020-1 at no cost other than my time.

While my update worked, it took over 6 hours to load the new maps via a single USB plugged in to the glovebox port. Hopefully I get some feedback on why it took so long.

For others starting from zero base knowledge and experience, below are the steps I needed to follow to complete the task. They are all on the forum and full credit goes to those I reference below, and I’m sure others I didn’t.

To complete the learning process on how to update the Navigation Maps on my 2009 BMW 335i E92 Coupe, I needed to search a few threads to piece all the steps together. I knew my car would support the update since I had done a Premium update in 2016 and I have the check mark and (i) displayed in the bottom left corner. The information was great but at least for me, each thread seemed to assume I had full knowledge of all steps and terms needed to understand and I did not. For example, I was not familiar with or I had forgotten over time about torrent’s and RAR. Again, not difficult but a bit like trying to translate a foreign language you don’t have experience with at times.

1) I first found a thread started by @remlemasi, Road Map North America PREMIUM (USB) 2020-1
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1654612
I was not familiar with torrent and before I was able to download the files, I needed to download a torrent downloading program. I found this requirement on page two of remlemasi’s thread. Thank you remlemasi.

2) I remember needing an FSC code when I purchased the 2016 update and found a thread started by @portalseo. Again, this was all new to me but I was able to follow the instructions and pulled the 1b file from my car with the unpacked 1b.zip file and loaded it on a formatted USB stick. My stick was a USB 3.0, 64GB but I formatted it as FAT32, 32GB. Detailed instructions in the link below. The USB stick I inserted in the glove box port pulled the required 1b.hex file as described in the link below. I didn’t confirm the 319 byte file size since I didn’t open it with a hex editor but all worked fine so I assume it was the correct size. Thank you portalseo.
a. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1461515

3) Next, I downloaded the windows version of “bmw_cic_fsc_generator.zip”, the FSC generator I believe developed by Jaeger. Opened the FCS Generator, selected the 1b.hex file from the computer folder I stored it on after completing the steps outlined by portalseo, selected the Map Type, Region, and MAPS option, checked the Lifetime box, and hit the Generate button and got my code. Thank you Jaeger.
a. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1453464

4) I made a failed attempt to load the new maps via the USB port in my glove box before searching some more and finding I needed to unpack the RAR files first. I downloaded WinRAR, selected all 5 RAR files, right clicked on the five highlighted files and extracted them to folder I had created. I opened the new folder and copied the new pkgdb folder and the config.nfm file to the root of a USB stick.

5) I put the single USB stick with all the maps in the glove box USB port, received the request to update to a newer map version, selected yes, was prompted for the FCS code, entered it and installation began.

While more experienced coders my find this post simplistic and the information already exists in other threads, it might help others with little to no background complete the update without missing steps taken for granted by the regulars. Please add or correct if I left something out or gave incorrect advice.

I’m not sure the time it took me to work through the learning curve was worth the $40 I could have paid for a code, detailed instructions and a download link but it gave me a sense of accomplishment and if I had the knowledge I have now and summarized above, the time required would have been cut at least in half.

Thanks again to everyone that helped me, especially remlemasi, portalseo and Jaeger.

Update should have taken about 45mins. Next time use a properly sized USB stick, not a 64gb one formatted fat32. I'm guessing that was your issue. I've also had some 32gb units work and some don't. CIC might be a bit picky.

I had no issues with a 128gb stick formatted to FAT32. A 64gb drive will work too as long as it is using FAT32.

I used the free AOMEI partition manager to create the odd size partition/drive under Windows 10.

Installation took about 45 minutes total time.

I did it while driving, stopping once.

I was able to use the CIC & radio while it uploaded the update. The update resumed once I started the car after the stop.

There are a few variables that may have caused the long update process but I ordered a couple SanDisk USB 2.0 32GB sticks to minimize that possibility for next time. They don't cost much. Hopefully BMW will provide additional updates.

Regardless of speed, the update worked. Thanks.

there are three type of usb 1,2 and 3. if you have an old usb stick it's probably a usb 1. that thing is slow. I have usb 3 128gb format to fat32. it took less than 40 minutes. I had use isb 1 stick before it would and it took over 4 hours.

because limitation for fat32, I use powershell.command is below. the x represent the usb drive letter. when launching powershell, launch with admin right by right powsherl and run as administrator.

format /FS:FAT32 X:

My stick was a USB 3.0, 64GB but I had formatted it as FAT32, 32GB in Windows and Windows format tools only allows formatting FAT32 up to 32GB. That may or may not have been the cause of slow load times. I haven't seen USB 1 in many years.

I've taken a bit simpler route and downloaded a program that will format my larger 64GB and 128GB USB's in FAT32 allowing me to use all the available memory. I converted my iTunes Library (Apple Lossless) to MP3, 44100Hz, 320kbps and put it on a USB 3.1 64GB flash drive, taking up 32.8 GB and it works great through the arm rest USB port.

Hello all,
After borrowing my GFs car, I noticed that she still have 2012 map on her car..
First found an update for her media devices on bmw site.. copied it to an usb and updated the media utility..
Then found fsc 1b code tools..
Used the usb and got the 1b.hex file to create fsc codes necessary to install the new map.

Downloaded east europe 2020-1 usb files..

extracted the pkgdb folder and config.nfm files to root folder of fat32 formatted 32gb usb..

ignite on the car.. entered navigation...
plugged the usb to glove box usb port..

pressed option while in navigation...
but no update mark..

I wonder if my car has an usb update option or just dvd version??
If only dvd.. how can I burn the dvd and update??
Same as usb? RUn nav.. insert dvd and update starts?

VIN code is.

An update..

Replaced the usb from 32 gb Sandisk Cruiser to 64 gb (created a 32 gb partition and formatted to fat32 also) transcend and asked for update..

So it is working...

Another question..
Seems like the player does not have any bluetooth connection (or connectdrive)
is it something that I can add (or enable)

I dont mean simple bluetooth adapters that I can connect to aux port.. instead anything that I can use to go online for traffic updates etc..

Is your FSC code the same forever? I pulled the code to do the 2019 update. Do I need a new one for the 2020 update?

Thanks for the write-up.

If you installed the lifetime FSC code you can install newer updates without providing a new code each time.

Thanks George!

I upgraded my maps back in 2015 from 2011, but back then i paid for an fsc code and link for download(cic usa premium-usb). On january of this year i moved to East Europe. I was trying to update them without paying and this was the perfect writeup. My issue was that i had four different usb’s and only one of them worked! All of them were formatted to fat32 and had either 32-128gbps! The ones that were bigger than 32gbps, i partitioned and formatted to 32gbps with fat32 to no avail. But my cousin had a 32gbps usb, and that worked like a charm, just putting this on here in case someone is running into same issue i did.

Thanks a bunch

Another thing to add, i didnt need to do anything special to change maps from usa premium to east europe premium, the same exact procedure applies. I was reading on some forums that some coding needs to be done to switch regions due to some frequency differences, and this was not the case for me!

My car - 2011 328i x-drive m-sport navigation with CIC.

Hopefully this helps somebody that might be in my shoes

So I got everything installed on the USB. When asking for the "Activation Code" which is the FSC Code, it says the code I entered is incorrect. I tried "life time" and without it for the FSC Key Generator, and still no luck. Keeps saying incorrect code. My vehicle is a 2010 E90.. Any advice?

What did you use to generate the code?

Did you download the 1B file?

I used the IOS FSC Code Generator. Yes I pulled the 1b hex file. I read up on the forums that the script that pulls the 1b file could be defective?

The script is not defective rather people are not reading the instructions particularly when it comes to the limitations and requisites.

Did you check to see if you are getting the 123456 VIN problem?

What is your vin?

Does the download speed of the maps depend on which torrent client you use to download? Or is it just the internet speed you have?

No it depends upon the total number of seeding sites you are connected to and what their speed is.

The more seeders the faster you download.

Given the size of the download 2-4 hours is pretty good.

I extracted the 1b.hex file from the car, then I put the files for the update in a 32GB stick formatted fat32. I got the update message, but the code doesn't work. I tried lifetime and simple a lot of times. Can someone help me please?
I own a 2010 e90
