Engine warning light.
Hi, all Had my 335i auto for two weeks. Just had engine fault warning light come on, yellow in dash warning symbol, and iDrive message saying engine fault, reduced power. Continued 60 miles slowly, no noise but definite power loss. When i stopped at home, and re-started the light went out.
Any ideas please. Can't see dealer until Monday. |

Did it come on the moment you decided to "UNLEASH THE FURY"??? or did it just randomly pop up as you were cruising at a steady speed?
Basiclaly mine did the same thing and got me a bit worried - codes etc read by BMW, turns out to be something to do with the Vanos Soleniod for the exhaust (hence why it only popped up under WOT, and continues to randomly pop up when I am "flooring" it). Anyways after a bit of a search on the forums, turns out it's a simple 1/2 hr DIY job to replace the solenoid, which is in an easily accessible position. I Just need to find out the price of the unit, then get it fitted - prob by my mate at BMW ;-) Basically I just wanted to re-assure you that although it might seem catastrophic when you see the EML come on, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Although your prob might be more serious than mine...... |

Get yourself a fault code reader. you won't need to spend much and it could save you a trip to the garage, or at least it will point you in the right direction if the a fault code was logged in the ECU.

Lots of possibilities here and as said without reading the codes it will be a stab in the dark.
Common causes:
Does it disappear if your stop/start the engine, or leave it for an hour or two? Does the engine feel lumpy or doesn't run as smooth as normal? Most of the above issues are fairly easy to fix and not too expensive, but it depends on if you know a good indy and if you have a bit of patience. Dealers sometimes take the big hammer approach to this and replace a lot which is fine when you have warranty. Out of warranty, paying ~ £2K for 6 new injectors is no fun and everything else should really be tried before spending this kind of money. |

If you are out of warranty might I suggest you call Jason at BW chip tune (unless you know a local specialist)
He is very well skilled with these engines and can of course also read / interpret / delete as necessary the fault codes. 07831 103030 Tell him Dave / Mega sent you..

The VANOS code doesnt necessarily mean its a solenoid.
There is a known wear issue with the camshaft ledges, which cause loss of pressure I guess. You will find the vanos gears dont position as quickly as they should as a result and you get a vanos tining error. Sometimes low oil / oil surge / hard cornering on rough like track kerbs can cause it, or simply dirty lube. Needs more info.

Unlikely to be related to the battery. You really need to read the codes with a BT, GT1, AutoLogic or other tool that will read BMW specific codes.
Common causes are: - Bad ignition coils - Fuel injectors - Spark plugs - VANOS fault - HPFP fuel pump - Boost leak - etc. Until you read the codes you won't really know. |

AFAIK, the adaptations will not reset by just pulling the battery (or running it flat), so I think it's a coincidence.
Generally the Engine Fault is more likely to happen under load. So just idling or very light throttle will most likely not trigger the fault. Is the engine feeling lumpy or is it running smooth? E.g. if it feels smooth then it could be that you have a boost leak. E.g. FMIC coupling popped off. If it's lumpy then you probably have a misfire. So all that's changed is that the battery went flat and you then did a highspeed run? If the following is not a typo then, the engine would have been under full load, so it could be a number of things. What fuel are you using? |

From my own experience...the engine light came on, after 1 hour's drive...(non stop) ...and it did highlight the common issues...(injectors, HPFP, vanos etc) ...BUT THE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AFTER A LONG DRIVE....so if you drive your car for short journeys, then you won't even know if you have these issues or not...

go for long test drives and short test drives.... I bet you, it will come on after long test drives....(i.e more than 1 hour) ...and i bet you it will be one or all of the COMMON faults of the 335i... |

You really need to get the codes read as everything else will be pure speculation. Find a local indy that have an AutoLogic kit and get them to read the codes for you.
If the engine is running smooth, then it could be that you have a boost leak and under light load the engine management finds that it can't build boost and throws an error. E.g. have a look a the pictures in my thread below. This shows the IC connector that could be loose. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=373990 It's a splash tray off to get to the connector, but you may be able to see it from the top. |
