Anyone run 19" in winter?

I have a spare set of 19" wheels that I want to throw winter tires on. Anybody try this? It's my only only option right now. Don't want to have to sell them and then buy something smaller. Thanks in advance.

IMO rim size doesn't really matter, it's the fact that aftermarket wheels are usually a lot wider, thus, when in slippery conditions, the weight of the car is spread out over more area, leading to reduced traction. Wide tires in the sun is all good, not so much in rain ice and snow.

Get snow tires or the 19 s and you should be OK.

...oh wait, you're in Canada, you're screwed

Well I've run 18" with snows in the past and never really had an issue so I guess I'll give it a shot. After all Toronto isn't exactly Siberia in the winter.

I've had a few customers do this before, but generally they prefer to go with 18s instead.

should be fine, just be careful of all the potholes we get here in wintertime. slap on some 235/35/19s and you're good to go.

225/40R18 > 235/35R19 for winter conditions. Doesn't mean that 235/35R19 isn't doable, just not as effective and less protection for the wheel from winter damaged roads.

running <40 aspect ratio tire during winter is not smart in my opinion unless you live in the south. small sidewall combined with fluctuations in tire presure do to temp with the addition of more potholes is just a recipe for bent wheel.

I have 19 for winter (40 series tires). No issue. Just have to watch out for those 'grand canyon' size potholes, esp. downtown Toronto.

Will these work? Think I'll go with them in a 235/40R19

It depends on your wheel width and offsets. If the wheel specs are conservative and you aren't too low, those might fit without rubbing, but also there is change that it will rub somewhere on the wheel well. Generally i wouldn't go with wrong height ratio tyres.

Member Frode D used to have 19x9.5 square with 235/35/19 winter setup. If i remember correctly he said that they don't get that much snow there, tho. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=767510

These are my wheels:

Front: 8x19 ET:37
Rear: 9x19 ET:39

These are my OEM tire sizes:

Front: 225/35-19
Rear: 255/30-19

Running stock suspension. I'm doing square as well.

235/40R19 is pretty tall and will probably not fit without rubbing.

If you decide to use 19", stick with 225/35R19 or 235/35R19.

Sounds good. I can probably make the 235 fit on the rear but not the 225?

Not to thread jack but a 245/45/R19 would probably not fit to well on a 07 335i with sport suspension then huh?

Correct, these are very unlikely to fit.

Ok so one last thing. I'm going to go with 235/35's on the front. But for the back, which is a 9" wheel, should I also go for a 235 or would a 245/35 be better? Not sure if the 235 will be too stretched. Thanks again guys.

Winter setup:
19" Blizzaks
225/40R19 8.5"
255/35R19 9.5"

Haven't had many problems except the rear tires leaking air when it gets really cold here in winterpeg. Also fronts are slightly too tall and I gotta be careful when turning or might crack the fender.

This year I got some new 19x8.5 wheels (same tires).. hoping it wont leak as much.
