Well my car freaked out again..... It's got 75000 miles and my SA ensured me it had the latest HPFP... Well here we go again.

Been getting slow starts and about 3 times it showed "Engine Malfunction. Reduced Power.......etc"

That was the "new and fixed" HPFP. SA said this is the first one of the new hpfp's he's seen fail. Oh great.

Ive been getting another strange warning light, ABS Braking System Malfunction. This turns off all DSC, start off brake (for manuals like mine), ABS etc. It's dangerous to drive but you don't can tell the difference until you need it of course.

Anyway, the failure is in the traction control / abs / dsc hydraulic pump which will run a nice $2400 for the new one. Also, a rear wheel bearing is bad and needs to be replaced. That bearing has speed sensors in it apparently.

Anyway, what in the world else could possibly break on this car?

Unrelated to all that, the passenger window safety thing needs adjusting because when closing the top, it goes up, then bumps right back down. Weird.

Btw this will be around $4500 thus far. Ive already spent around $12k on it in two years.. So you people who can barely afford to drive a bimmer need to carefully consider the out of pocket expenses associated with a luxury car.

Ive got extended warranty and its been the worlds best decision ever made. Most people don't buy them and i feel super sorry for them haha.

ha true! but i feel sorry for the guy who bought one of these not expecting to come out of pocket SO much money. some money? sure.. but SOOOO MUCH MONEY.

My rule of thumb is: if my average out-of-pocket expenses are about equal to a new car's monthly payment, (say, 70-80% of it), then I'm getting another car and getting rid of this rolling money pit.

Mind you, I still might sell if it even approaches 50%, but pretty much it's a no-brainer at 70-80%.

I had the exact same symptons. Car was doing this for about a week or two, but I didnt bother with it because it was still parked for storage.

Changed the battery, and all was well..

..odd.

This is why I finally got rid of the E39 that I loved. It was extremely reliable...until it wasn't. When it started averaging $1,000 every other month, it was time for it to go. The last straw was replacing the intake manifold and then finding a massive oil leak the very day it returned from the shop. Gotta cut your losses at some point.

traction control fault and abs BMW now do a repair kit so it now cost a fraction of the full unit price. I have the same problem but as the weather has been ok I'll get it sorted in my own time and it's also quite good fun without it 😁

What he meant to say is you need TO USE the extended warranty, not cry here that you spent $12k and about to spend another $4500

I do use the extended warranty. It has not cost me that much money, I would have run the car off a cliff a long time ago. I'm just putting it out there that this car, for a 50k dollar car is a nightmare. When so many major things break, its a sign that these cars are soon destined for a junk yard.

The HPFP issue reoccuring is a strong possibility.

THe problem is that bmw only fixes the "problem" or the failing part. They do not trace the cause and fix it. That seems to be one issue but im no expert so whatever.

I had the same error as you. I changed the bearing and it went away. Change the bearing first as that is a common issue. ABS pump failure is less common and it us unlikely both went bad at the same time.

The bearing is $80 + a couple of hours of labor. Dealer will want $700 but an Independence shop will be $300-400. The tone ring is built into the bearing and the sensor is mounted up against the back of the bearing.

Interesting! Well they say theyre going to replace the pump and the bearing. Maybe its a money making tactic they use. The warranty company's adjuster is going out today to take a look at it. If he approves the pump then more than likely it has to be replaced.

Get ready for the next round of HPFP failures.

this is why i lease, ive had three bmw's in the past ten years, my e39 cost me dearly and i was still making payments. now i lease turn them in for new and never even have to worry about oil changes. i would rather pay $150 more per month and never have to come out of pocket 2 to 3k at one time, you are going to pay one way or another. even with no fuel pump problems, i had to replace the complete ac system, a water pump, the abs control module and the keyless entry stopped working which probably would have cost more to trouble shoot then it was worth.

repair kit on Real OEM is $1150 ! still damn expensive
