No it's not like the Toyota issue. If the DSC unit fails then you still have perfectly functioning brakes. Many cars don't have stability controls anyway.

This is safety critical, in my opinion, should they not be "recalling" like Toyota have been doing worldwide (for an example of DSC malfunction going badly wrong see http://www.bmw-syndikat.de/bmwsyndik...E92___E93.html ).??

I know it's not the brakes, but you only need the DSC to fail whilst you've got your foot down going around a corner, and be trusting the DSC to do its job, and "hey presto" the back end steps out and your in a ditch! (or worse).

I'm sorry, but I think that it could be safety critical in certain circumstances, just like the Prius brakes if you are gently braking (but not hard braking when the brakes are good).

I have to say that I am a bit dissapointed in BMW - there are loads of BMW Service Information Bulletins (SIBs) on DSC faults and yet they fail to acknowldege there is a problem.

Well, I've just had codes 24 & 35 appear in my car - I've got the car booked in in a couple of weeks' time (the earliest they could do).

Fortunately, I did take out an extended warranty (the BMW one, comprehensive, £25 a month, £250 excess), so that should cover it, if it is the DSC unit.

It's the first time I've ever taken out an extended warranty on a car, and boy am I feeling glad I did!

My unit went on 2005 e90 at only 80k miles!!!

Took it to Williams BMW and was quoted £1800 to fix it, but after crying and throwing myself on the floor in a showroom full of customers they agreed to do the part at cost £619.57 out of good will so it only cost £874.

Just shows what they can do if they really want to....

Dear All

I got mine fixed with the "repair kit" last week for £438inc VAT. All working fine and once again I was pretty grumpy about BMW's policy but delighted with North Oxford BMW's polite and efficient service. On paying the bill I had a polite, but firm, whinge at the service advisor about feeling let down by BMW and she said she would see what she could do.

I got a call today and she said that BMW would meet some costs towards the parts to fix the fault due to the age of my car and I would now pay less than £350inc VAT.

Confidence in BMW being a fair and respectable prestige marque is now restored and I might just venture into BMW ownership for my next car as well!!!

Also it says earlier:

Carry out control unit survey, DSC pressure sensor fault, supply and fit DSC hydro unit repair kit £174.80+VAT

So, I guess its a repair for the faulty sensor in the hydro unit...

Anyway, still pleased with the fix compared to the £1700 horror stories that I read about before.

hey gaz...which dealer did you use?? sounds like a proper solution compared to my mechanics solution of £1650 for a new part that has a price tag like its gonna make my 3 series fly!!!! My unit packed up in nov'09 i have been driving since with no problem except the loud warning noise when i start the engine. Its a shame really almost £2000 and not much of a contribution to the driving experience!! hope i'm given the same deal as you though!! pls advise which dealer... thanks!

My situation is a little different. I was driving my 2005 55 BMW 330d M Sport Auto today (32K miles). It was a fairly damp day and as I pulled away from traffic lights, I gave the accelerator a healthy kick which prompted the dreaded "bong" - I checked the dash, and I had two amber warning lights (DTC and exclamation mark if my memory serves me correctly). The i-Drive system then told me that DTC had failed, that cruise control was disabled and that my tyre pressure monitor was inoperative. It advised driving on with caution. I was not a happy bunny.

Anyway, I drove home, parked up, and cycled through the various messages again (aware of the hefty repair bill attached to such a failure - my Uncle lost his DTC on his 120d M Sport a little while back). I switched the engine off. Then, out of curiosity, I started the car up again. No warning on the dash, no bong, no message about tyre pressure indicator etc. Intrigued, I went for a spin around the block. Cruise control was working fine. No issue with tyre sensors. ABS functioning. Conditions did not allow for a test of the DTC though. However, when I carried out the on board system check, it came back okay. Furthermore, when I drilled down the i-Drive menus and checked the system, all was fine.

That's basically the same as what happened to me - it died and then came back to life when I restarted the engine. That was around 3 months ago now and I've had no issues since and DSC has come into play here and there.

Hi Guys,

I have just had a similar problem. I left the car after a long journey which had no problems. 5 Days later when I came back to the car, I had 2 amber warning lights.
1. Suspension control system failed
2. Drive-off assistant failed.

The car drives as before, but I assume DTC and DSC are deactivated.
Anyone know what the snag could be? Very scared of a £1500 bill, the car is 2 weeks over the 3 yr warranty and only just come back from the end of warranty check.

Had the dsc failure light on my 120d. Bmw stockley park, gave 80% of a £144 repair part, but wacked me for initial diagnostic, £300 quid labour and for brake fluid. Paid just under £500 incl vat.

Had I known the repair part was available would have definitely used an indepandant

I'm crossing my fingers that a different part was used for the e92.

maybe theres just soooo many more e90's out there.

hello all ...update from my previous post ...finally mustered up the courage to go to approach my BMW dealer about the DSC failure on my e90 (after having being quoted £1700 frm my mechanic december last year) the lady said she could only quote after a £60 diagnostic depending on the failure...got a call later quoting just £350 for the failed hydro unit and £115 for steering unit coding (separate issue i presume) ...so fear not if you have a similar failure i assume it applies for most bmw's post 2006 since i paid as much as someone did for a 1-series (quoted earlier) the car drives same as it did before though not much change at all...this thread helped me loads ..thanks every1 for ur contribution

Dammit - same problem has now popped up in my car!!! This is so fustrating...it's just over the warranty period by 3 months....seems like such a coincidence that so many are going just after 3 years!!!
Anyway have booked it in with BMW - hopefully they don't bump me with some high cost!! Will post an update when I get it!!
