I dont think its a conspiracy, its just what old thermostats do.
Every car i've owned has had a faulty thermostat, across various marques including Audi, BMW and Isuzu, and they all fail by opening too early and stopping the engine reaching its normal operating temp. |

I had both stats replaced in 2013 i think, or maybe 2014. Recently realised my temp was sitting anywhere between 70c and 78c on a motorway cruise, even after 20 miles which is enough. Sometimes it gets to 85 then drops, so i think i will replace the egr stat and hope its just that.

I had the exact same issue on my M57! I did both thermostats and it ended up being the EGR one. For £20 and an hour of your time definitely do the EGR one and DIY it if your half competent with a spanner!
Could save you a bit of dough and time. |

Changed my EGR last week as my engine never got over and mainly ran at 76c. On the first run out after changing it the engine got up to 92c so well happy for a £20 fix and an hr of my time. Second run out got to 81c and now sits at 80c so slight improvement but will be getting the main stat changed asap.
On a related note have been told by someone in the know that constant regeneration of the dpf will decrease the life of the turbo because of the position of the dpf being next to the turbo and the ridiculous temps the dpf gets to when regenerating. So regular short journeys just aren't good for diesels. |
