I changed mine after just over 4,100 km (2,600 mi) and was shocked at both how much was collected and how thick and full of sludge the bottom of the can was.

The 335d crankcase ventilation system is very strict from an emissions standpoint. Horrible for carbon build up.

I'll be doing a drain later on today.

Just did a 3k mile drain.
Didn't need to, however, I wanted to do it for R&D purposes, make sure everything is holding up fine.
So far roughly 10,000 miles on the set up; all parts and installation is holding up well and doing a great job of filtering the blow by from going into the intake.

It should be "ok" to drain during every oil change interval (8k - 11k). However, every car is driven different along with the driving environment.

NOTE: Can was cleaned completely after every drain.

I think I understand your question.

The M57 has a crankcase ventilation system. The catch can filters and collects the blow by oil, etc. and prevents it from being recirculated back into the intake stream.

These cars do not have a PCV; also it can be quite harmful for the engine, especially a turbo charged motor, to simply block (lock in) blow by gasses.

Your oil in the catch can looks much different than mine. Mine remains a liquid. I wonder if the reason yours turns into that harder paste is perhaps the location of the can? Your can is located down near the turbos right? A high heat area.

Oh it's all blow by. Nothing is "solid" It is near the EGR cooler (well heated area). This installation has been on since April (all Spring and Summer months). I wanted to keep the hoses as short as possible, along with gravity feeding the input to prevent any pooling.
Underside of the can cover was never cleaned, in the pic you can see the layer of build up so far for 10k.

I'm sure there is some soot mixed in from the fuel combustion.

I've put on about 10k so far with this setup and its holding up pretty well.

It's a decent kit. Pain in the rear to put those elbows in. Budget an hour at least and a few choice words.

For those elbows, sounds like the apt saying is "put some fur around it and it will go in". If kit doesn't come with hose clamps, the elbows must really get crammed in there to not need any. Not doubting you 135i.... perhaps a case for some Astroglide, hahahahaha

I was texting that phrase to 2deer when i was trying to get Ecotune pipe installed with the stupid O2 (or is it NOx?) sensor bung up top. Forgive me TDI as i know you have told us numerous times which one is where.

So here is my idea. Using 135i's kit, I might use a slightly different location provided he gives me enough hose length. I don't have the EGR cooler anymore so I'm considering putting the catch can where cooler used to sit. It will depend on
1)it's diameter (campared to cooler thickness)
2) that it will in no way get sucked into serpentine belt below.

I see potential to be able to tie wrap it there to keep it secure. I do see negatives that it will have much more inlet air coming into engine compartment through grill. Alas, I live in south Texas where it freezes once a year. Only concern there would be when i drive to Ft. Worth during winter where mid 20's °F happens. I will draw my concept on the yozh photo. thanks to Yozh for the picture.

I would be pulling the whole thing attached to the turbo inlet elbow as shown in my last pic. It is easy to disconnect the CCV pipe at the electrical monitored circuit/heater connector. But quite a pita to pull the pipe from the turbo inlet elbow (two very stubborn clips), need four hands to do it. If my understanding/imagination is correct, the kit connectors that will go in instead of the pipe. These or anything else that you are attaching would be easier to work with if you are doing this with parts in your hands and off the car, and then you can Astroglide it liberally

Cuda, it is O2 sensor on that downpipe. Two temp sensors and O2 sensor up-top and a temp sensor and NOx sensor lower downstream. I got corrected on that one so I remember
