Speaker Upgrade Time :)

Hi All,

I am sick of these base stereo speakers so now has come the time to change. I currently have an aftermarket Kenwood double din headunit installed.

My plan is to first change out the front door speakers for some coaxials wired directly to the headunit. The internal amp should be enough just for these.

Next I will be buying an external amp to power some uprated speakers (subs) under the front seats and also uprated rear 4" speakers. This will be good enough for me I think.

Just doing some research into which speakers to choose and how much it's all going to cost me!

I'm looking at mine too for my E91. I want to keep the standard headunit though as I want to keep all funtionality.

I think I am going to splice an RCA convertor in from the underfloor subs

It's not clear what your budget is however I highly recommend the Alpine Kit with HIFI/L7 subs, it'll be plenty. HIFI coding will also make a massive difference and also make sure you add front tweeters to the system setup.

Aftermarket, well you have many choices but you need experience in how to wire.

When you say all functionality, what do you mean? My car seems to still have everything functioning i.e. steering wheel controls, all chimes, etc. The headunit has bluetooth so nothing lost there either.

Well, as I have already got an aftermarket headunit, I think this is the best route to take. And like you said, huge choice. No issues with wiring stuff up either as I have done it before a few times.

Not at all! Everything still works for me. I guess you just need to make sure you have all the correct harnesses etc.

Right, I've bought the mounting brackets and the wiring adapters so don't need to cut the OEM wires. Just need to decide which speakers to buy! Looking at the aftermarket speaker list now....

if have the money to spend i would 100% recommend the Jenhurt package

http://www.jehnert.de/en/shop/doorbo...-3-5-7-series/

Then amp them with a JL XD600/6, you can then just find some cheap decent coaxial for the rear or use OEM hifi/logic 7 speakers..

2 channels for the front mid
2 channels for the under seats
2 channels for the rear coaxial

I've installed some Pioneer TS-G1033i coaxial speakers upfront in the doors. Not much difference tbh....It's a little clearer on the highs, tiny bit more bass. Nothing spectacular but didn't expect much without external amplification.
In the process of looking at speakers for underseat and getting an external amp. Will do the rear shelf speakers at the same time. I am open to lots of options due to having an aftermarket headunit. However, after speaking to some car audio specialists in my area, they don't seem to agree that anything other than what's specifically designed for the E90 will not fit or sound great...I can't understand this!
My view is that if the right mounting depth is right (I plan to also use some mdf spacers for underseat if required) then what is the issue?
I have looked at the SWS6.5 shallow subs and cannot see why they won't fit...

If I was you chap , I would buy the e90 window trims so you can install the tweeters in the corners of the door, then buy a set of components , or a set of 'add on ' tweeters, this will make your front sound a lot brighter and I did this to begin and was happy with that .
Then I have added a JL audio amp , along with a pair of match underseat speakers, which is definitely a step in the right direction , I have disconnected the speakers in the rear doors , and running the underseats off two channels, and the fronts off the other two channels .
At the moment sound is vastly improved, a lot clearer, more punchy bass but need to set it up properly, will then debate wether to add an amp and a boxed sub firing through the ski hatch ,good luck, Den .

Cool, thanks for that. Which speakers did you use for under seats exactly?

With regards to the fronts, the pioneers do have inbuilt tweeters and the sound has improved somewhat, as in it is brighter than before. I guess they need to run off an external amp to get their full potential! Also I know stand alone tweeters would sound much better due to the positioning. However, I am more worried about the mids and bass so will focus on the underseats and external amp. I am certain this will improve things alot like you say.

EDIT: Just found those match speakers on amazon as per your response on the other thread Did you have 8 inch oem speakers in there before? As I have currently 6.5 inch speakers in there (I think??) as I thought that was the standard size! So confused as to whether I would need specifically 6.5 inch or 8 inch....

Hello mate, you do have 6.5" underseat as standard, nut most upgrade ones you can purchase will be 8" , the frame is the same size but the speaker is that bit bigger .
That's a definite , and I bought the match as the year are made by a decent company , but also didn't want to spend loads and be disappointed as cannot imagine an underseat speaker hitting as hard as a dedicated boxed sub can .
But when amped am pleasantly surprised ,definitely a much better sound in the car,but it is missing some of the very low notes, but that is probably due to me not having the crossovers set correctly yet, but I am still contemplating adding a dedicated sub for that, and running the underseats as proper mid bass speakers, undecided yet lol .
And the decent thing with the match speakers is that if you are buying from extreme audio ( the people I bought from ) decent delivery time from Germany ,but you also are buying a pair :-) , as read carefully as some sellers on Amazon and also eBay are selling them singly too ,Den.
P.s ideally you should really look to be separating your door speaker and tweeter, I have always preferred one speaker one job lol , I used to run coaxial many moons ago and the did a decent job, but seeing as the kids are low down in the door, your front will be a lot clearer by moving the tweeters up :-) .

Thanks for that Den. Much appreciated. I will therefore now search for some 8 inch ones!! Makes the search much easier! That will be my next thing, install the 8 inch underseat with amp, then will do the tweeter separates. Makes sense to have them as dedicated stand alone ones. Maybe put these pioneers in the rear as I'm not too fussed about the rears.
Again thanks for the input and advice.

PS. I might look for some shallow mount 8 inch proper subwoofer instead of mid bass! See what I can find!

The majority of people seem to go for the earthquake sws8 subs, but have not heard any to comment on how good they are as 'subs' , other options are the mb quarts, also jennhert and Eton do underseats, good luck lol ,Den.

Yes, I ordered this boss performance kit from eBay as it had really good reviews and was fairly cheap!

Ah ok,hope it's all good, just had a quick snoop at the amp you bought, not a big fan of the xplod stuff ,but the rms per channel certainly is respectable enough so all good there . Do you have much experience of fitting aftermarket car audio chap ? Rather ask that then spend any time waffling about crud you already know lol .
