Has anyone done this? Also, are taxes usually paid out of state, and the only you would need to do would be register the car in california?

I am thinking about getting a 335 coupe used from out of state, chicago. The dealer said i would pay the 6.25% tax in chicago and would not have to pay ca tax. Is that true?

That does not sound right. If you plan on taking the car to CA, you would pay CA taxes when you register your car.

this is what the sales guy said at the dealer in chicago.

"The only other fees would be a $30 driveaway fee for temporary registration until you get yours locally, a $150 title documentary fee, and tax rate of 6.25% (in chicago) that we would have to collect and pay to California, and that would be all."

If a car is going to be registered out of state, all of your state's taxes and fees APPLY.

plus any additional fees from the point of purchase.

You should be paying all the fees to him including registration. At least thats what I do here. I have the plates sent to me, then I send them to the customer if there out of state.

We don't have a 6.25% sales tax,it varies from 7.25 -9% depending on your county.When I sell a car to someone from CA or any other state,we collect their state sales tax,registration and sometimes plate fees.

They should be collecting your tax rate at home - not theres. That will cause you problems - trust me. If it sounds too good to be true - it probably is

i did this too... bought in chicago then when i came to register in Wisc, I didn't pay a dime in tax... however i had it registered in IL and just switched it when i came back up after winter break... kinda stupid cuz wisc taxes are lower but oh well
