BMW Performance Intake Installation

Tools:
- torx screw
- 10mmsocket or nut driver
- small phillips screw driver
- flat head screw driver

Install time: 1 hour

Part 1 of 2 - Removal of stock intake
Note: There is an existing stock intake removal DIY but for completeness I'll have my own DIY for this.

Step 1.1 - remove the torx screws and 10mm bolts that secure the intake channel and housing (Fig 1)

Step 2.2 - install the new intake housing back to engine compartment (Fig 12)

That's it and you're good to go!

Start the car and check for errors - you shouldn't be getting any.

Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to evaluate the intake as I had to bring it to the shop first thing in the morning for the exhaust install.

Sound-wise, there's very little improvement or probably I didn't drive it long enough to notice it. Though I feel like the car was running better. In theory it should have an impact - the more cold air the engine gets, the better and more efficient it runs; an efficient engine does less work and shall gain better fuel consumption.

Btw, this is rated by BMW to have a performance gain of 3hp at 6K rpm.

I just installed my performance air intake today and have some comments about your write-up. The original bonnet seal and the plastic piece under it held on by the screw have to be removed. The screw and expanding plastic piece it screws into are used to secure the air duct (part D). Make sure to position it correctly or the new bonnet seal won't fit. Also, only 4 torx screws are supplied and used to hold down the intake housing cover. The torx screws closest to the rear intake duct are already installed and do not hold down the intake housing cover. They attach additional ducting to the
underside of the intake housing cover. Still an excellent writeup and great pictures.

See Step 1.4 / Fig 7 for bonnet seal and adapter removal.

Thanks for the clarification on the number of torx screws for the housing cover. I did say "supplied torx screws" but did not exactly specify how many.

Thanks guys. I'm glad that many of you liked it. I'd be honored of course if future DIYs are written with the same concept taken from this DIY.

The idea basically consists of a couple of things: (1) identify and label the parts in the pictures, and (2) embed short step-by-step instructions into the pictures. Ultimately, my goal was to write a DIY that can be followed using a series of sequential pictures.

If anyone is interested, I used Skitch (skitch.com) for the annotations. This is a mac app in beta phase so I downloaded it for free. Not sure if there is a windows equivalent. Snag-It comes to mind but not sure if it's free.

The benefits are as follows, build quality, 100% fitment, retention of the warranty if anything were to happen, a piece of mind when you go to service your vehicle(no need to put stock engine parts back on each time), and appearance.
