320d or 330d

Gents,

My mother is looking to get a new car and she is considering a new Bimmer... I mentioned to her to look at the Diesel models that BMW offer... what do you think is better.... (value for money/performance)

320d or 330d?

Cheers.

I would say 320d as the 330d will be around 90k+ driveaway. Pocket the 30k difference, and pray that BMW Aus will introduce performance powerkits for the 320d in the near future.

Edit: Or get the 320d chipped yourself.

What about in contrast with the petrol models... are they as quiet/driveable?

320D is much better than 320 or 323 i felt, but this is going back a while now.

I would say 320D is the way to go.

Consideing that it is ur mum who will be driving it most, i think 320d will be more than sufficient. If she want more power, just get it chipped later then. Plus she have more money to add options on with 320d.

If they are both fitted with M-sports pack do they both have the same suspension and steering setups and transmission? with the only difference being the engine? which in the 330D is a twin scroll turbo with higher boost?

How much can you expect to pick a new 320D with M-sports/Innovations pack/and sunroof driveway for ?

Im thinking a chipped 320d with the above specks will be value for money? saving about $25k with similar features/options..

330d has bigger brakes compare with 320d, 320i, 323i and 325i. I'm pretty sure steering, suspension setups and transmission would be the same.

If you want to compare a petrol 6-cyl against a diesel 4-cyl, BMW have recently reduced the price of the 323i Sedan to $58,300 (from $63,200). I think this is now the same starting price as a 320d.

http://bmw.com.au/com/en/insights/ne...icles/853.html

The 323i has a detuned 2.5 litre 6-cyl engine rated at 140kW / 230Nm compared to the 320d's 130kW / 350Nm. One advantage of the 320d (& 330d) is its low fuel consumption which makes it eligible for the increased LCT threshold of $75,000.

Cheers! That is very good to know. I think you're right, fuel consumption is a big thing 5.4 combined cycle on the 320d.

The higher LCT threshold makes a big difference once you start adding options (Sport, sunroof, metallic paint etc) as you get slugged LCT with the 323i but not for the same options on the 320d.

M Sport Pack

However I'm guessing that BMWAU are hoping that they could push a few more 323i on to the roads, BMW dealers might be willing to negotiate more on the 323i than the 320d.

Have you given the X1 any thoughts? Yes, the exterior styling might not look too brilliant with that big arse 7 series kidney grill, and the interior might have some cheapish plastics but after reading an article from carsguide.com.au, the starting prices for the X1 will be around the low $50k.

Very good call on the PDC! Thanks mate...

Will definitely be going for the Metallic Paint - would like her to get the sunroof but that really isn't something that she will use...

Do you guys think that the Sport Pack will add to resale value?

Sports pack will add a bit on the resale value but it's a diesel, and comparing with a petrol sibling it might not be that great?

Get your mum a 335 and vishnu it. She will be able to watch your M3 in her rear view mirror

On a serious note the diesels with their massive torque would be great cars to own.

Thanks WOPALX.... I would love to get my mum a 135i or a 335i - but that ain't going to happen... As to your comments RE: M3 in the rear vision... don't get me started

Suffice to say, they are both great cars, both BMWs and both have their capabilities.

Yes they are. I wish the exhaust note of the M3 could be replicated.

M sports for your mom? you have one very funky mother!!

but in all seriousness, apart from the PDC which is always recommended for lady drivers, all your above options do help with resale value - ESP sunroof and business nav.

not sure if they still do innovations pack, that will take care of navigation, comfort access and xenon lights at one go.

Unfortuantely comfort access is no longer on the innovations pack.
It's a bloody $750 dollar option. Grrr

That sucks... I was also hoping for comfort access as part of the innovations pack... grrr...

The car sales man is bringing down the car for mum to test drive for the week. Should be interesting for her.

Will definitely give you guys a review..

Cheers
