looks to me if you keep your fuel over 1/4 at all time just to be safe - your hpfp will do just fine.
i did some runs just for giggles - kept the same 4 cars with over 1/4 tank the entire time .. and ran it to the car's limits as if racing on a track for about 2 hrs...no failures..
ran the same 4 cars with the gas light on for about 30 mins till ' miles to go ' was at about 15 miles ( same track , same conditions ) 3 of 4 had the long crank / reduced engine power light on the next day

any one noticed similar findings?
idk
just my findings-

The problem is the level of fuel in the tank ?

I don't believe that. I've always filled up mine at 1/4 of a tank, and today the HPFP in my 09 335 with only 15K miles died at a light about 1 mile from my house. Never got a recall letter. I guess BMW figured mine had one of the "fixed" pumps. Guess they were wrong.

Interesting because that has been noted by other people and the service departments had also told people not to let their tanks get below 1/4 a while back.
That may have something to do with it but nobody figured out exactly what yet

Ok...
For my point of view the problem it's only the fuel pump and stop.
It's located too near the engine.....

high temperatures cause problems for the integrated solenoid valve to the pump.

idk - just thought id post my opinion and what ive observed - ive kept my personal car always with over 1/4 tank - and i race my car literally every 2 days .. i have a 07 and never had the problem
while i have sat there and watch friends race with less fuel " to save weight" ..and the next day their car is in limp mode
i could be wrong but hey
ill stick to what works for me
maybe im one of the lucky ones with a proper working hpfp

I always keep my tank low because I don't drive much and don't want the gas to go bad. I'm almost always around 1/4 full but a lot of times less. 16,000 miles with no problems on a 2007 may build and no long cranks.

Franz, so I take it you you have never put ethanol in your car?

I agree with you, I think the "< 1/4 gasoline tank" is a myth or coincidence. Mine actually failed ~with~ full tank, after filling it at approx 1/2 tank, and I rarely let it go under 1/4.

As for the solenoid failing at high temp due to high temp, I think it's more plausible. Wonder what causes the long cranks though.

If my HPFP fails after the warranty miles, I'm going to replace it myself and cut the old one apart with a dremmel tool to see WTF is going on in there.

Addendum, if I remember my chemistry correctly, MTBE & ETBE are also strong solvents.

MTBE+ETBE: 15%
ETBE is a derivated of ethanol

If your HPFP fails your solution is the best way !!!
only 250$ for the component and the possibility of vivisection of the old component !

is the HPFP issue now considered something inevitable for all N54 engines? I'm not sure if its just the internet, but it seems like something that happens to more than 50% of N54's..

Yeah, right -- like you're going to be able to tell "what's going on in there" from a visual inspection, despite BMW not being able to fix it after 4 years!

No, but I'll understand how it works better than you.

Thanks for that link. It's really disconcerting as a buyer, bc this is exactly the car I want, and don't even see a close second in competition. it'd be nice to have any kind of clarity on this issue from bmw.. 30%, at least, are epidemic numbers..

Ahhhh, dont be mislead into thinking there were five different pumps. there may have been 5 different part numbers but that does not necessarily translate into 5 different pumps.

True.
But 5 differents part numbers only for this component it's a bad story.....

Overseas Repair

Just an FYI, I am an Army Officer stationed in Germany. I have a 2008 335i 6spd coupe with just over 40k. my HPFP just took a sh#t on me. I called the BMW dealership here and with my broken german was able to take care of things. They sent a mechanic to my house, accompanied by a tow truck, he tried to fix the software with no success, so they towed it in. they told me that they are going to replace the pump, and check/clean/replace the injectors, plugs, and the entire "black box" ecu? they mentioned that they see many american spec cars with this problem, but stated that they dont have as big of an issue with the german spec cars, they said they would replace it with a "good german pump"? it is still at the shop, but i will try and find out the part # and detail of this repair, maybe there is already a better pump out there for you guys, but its just made of "unobtainium" for guys in the states???
